just a bit of info needed lads and lasses,if you send a set of carbs to usa(wiredgeorge)then they send some back,all rebuilt and that,does that still mean that customs and exise bill you for vat,or the parcelforce people get a cut of money before you get your carbs back.

They will stuff you for the vat or excise duty on the value the sender puts on the package + that 8 quid.
Think you are ok if it's under £50 but not too sure on that.
See if they will state GIFT on the package but you will have no comebacks if it gets lost.

I just got screwed £13.50 vat + £8.00 on an item worth £55. Twats!

Good luck to you too. I'm sure we've all tried to minimise import duty when buying parts or services from abroad, I just don't like double standards.

In answer to your original question, I believe you will have to pay duty on the cost of an exchange set of carbs even though you have sent a set over in part exchange. This just reduces the overall cost. If your own carbs were refurbished and returned then I presume you will only have to pay duty on the cost of refurbishment but I'm no expert on that, or much else.

A few years ago I left a camera in the trunk (boot) of a car when returning from the USA, I contacted HMRC to ask about getting my camera returned without charge, explaining what I had done.
They told me that the sender in the USA needs to write on the postage label... "Returned Goods" My camera made it back to me all safe and sound, with no customs charges.

the carbs im doing are 33mm smoothbores,not a lot of people in uk can get the parts i need,as like rocking horse poo here,usa seem to have parts more readily available.

If you have proof of postage going outside the UK you can get away with not paying any duty.

I think the threshhold is now something like £18, under that they don't bill you.

If you are having a problem, sending your carbs, Why not get the parts shipped over, and get them done here? ( once you have done the work finding them)

I keep it to under £23,00!( not $$$$ ) so if you want something for £45.00 (ebay usa ) buy on one day, (£22.50 ) then leave it a day or so. again on another day, (2 shipments) might cost a bit more in shipping cost, but your keeping it under the customs minimum! The shipping costs, are not part of the customs charges There's nothing wrong with that.
