Removing a Zed Clutch - in situ?

#1 PostAuthor: Pigford » Thu Jun 14, 2007 6:49 pm

Am I right in thinking, the only way to remove the clutch basket on me Z1000A2, is to strip the engine! I seem to remember last time I was rummaging around that bit, it looked impossible to get the clutch out without splitting the engine :!: :?:

I have just looked at the manual, and you can remove all the clutch except the housing without splitting the cases.

You have to split the cases to remove the basket, but you should be able to split them and leave the top end /crank undisturbed.

Agree with Rich... "Cases must be split to remove the clutch basket". I have heard of a mod, where a minimum amount of alloy is removed from the cases to allow removal to be performed without splitting the cases. It is auguable whether it would be considered a necessary or desirable mod, mainly because the cases have to be split to do the mod!

It's good to know that you can leave the crank-shaft, head etc. undisturbed during this basket removal process.

Well, yeah, I would just remove it, but like you lot said, it needs a full stip-down, so it'll have to wait

Hello Pigford, sorry I missed you the other day, snatchy clutch would sound more like a broken friction plate than basket springs, have you had the pressure plate off to have a look yet, Steve

Hi Steve, yeah, all plates seem OK, no ridges/burrs on basket tangs
Its when pulling away on low revs & throttle, it sometimes judders and seems to slip a bit. But clutch don't usually slip other times, like full throttle :?:
Also a bit rattly sounding when toodling along in high gears at low speed, when opening throttle (too lazy to change down)

oh ok, that does sound more like the basket then. well done on your recent exposure to fame via Classic mechanics btw. I am with you on removing the front caliper, I have done the same thing to mine, 1 decent caliper offers far better braking than 2 rubbishy old calipers and looks better too
