4 x 4 Doremi exhaust.

Just took delivery of a set of Doremi Pipes from Z-Fever and came to fit left hand side pair, side with the stand rubbers on, and found that when the rear long hanger bolt is through the hanger and the nut nipped up, the bottom silencer is tight onto the rear spindle castle nut The distance between the hangers inside edge without the 2 rubber dampers in seems ok 252mm was wondering if the left side hanger subframe may be slightly out of shape? Oh, the bike is a Z1A and had a set of 4 into 2 Jardines fitted when I bought it.
Mark (pertonpc)gave me some measurements that had been taken from a range of Z models between these hangers and mine measure slightly more or wider by a milli or two so unless both hangers are bent over to the right I cant get why the bottom pipe is too far in???? Any suggestions Guys?

Can you post a picture of the problem?

If you are saying the castle nut is fouling the left pipes I got 2 quick ideas -

1. have you got two rubber dampers fitted to the exhaust hanger brackets on each side of the bike (4 total) before mounting the pipes?

2. My bike has castle nut to the right - which is pretty common - would that solve your problem if there is more play that side??

Hi Mark, Thought of putting the spindle through the other way but thought it might just transfer the problem to the other side? Also parts books that I have seen show spindle nut on the left. I will nip down and take a quick pic and post it here. I havent fitted the right side pair yet so dont Know what the clearance is like on that side. Cheers Dave.

I spent ages trying to get my new set of 4x4 pipes to fit that wouldnt untill i turned rear spindle round then straight on no probs

Might be worth a go.
I seem to recall parts book showing it to the left and owners under seat manual to the right so if one way works better go for it.

Also is it a non-standard castle nut?? this would not have mattered when the 4:1 was fitted but would show up now??

Castle nut should be on right when looking at bike from rear,threads on bolt should not protrude,poss bike has been over and hanger is bent,rubber bobbins could be compressed if old ones ,new ones you sometimes need to compress to get hanger bolts in.i recently fitted Dremi pipe and found it to be of superior quality to the Z power ones, albeit it seemed to be very slightly wider.When fitting the pipes fit all 4 collets first just rest pipes in these loosely,then fit rear hanger bolts,nip them up then fit front collets and clamps ,stick sealing washers in first with a blob of grease,dont be tempted to run bike up to temp in one go gradually build up temp by running bike slightly longer each time,this stop blueing of headers as long your mix is right.On most bikes the castle nut is very close to the bottom lower pipe.(have fitted a few more than one set like this)

Didnt think to look in the little old user manual Will swap the spindle to go through the other way tomorrow. Hopefully will be able to post some pics on the projects forum sporting the new pipes Cheers for the tips guys

Funny thinking of all the owners in the 70's junking those ugly heavy four pipes for a nice 4 into 1. Nice PJ's Dave but you should really be wearing slippers.

Agree with Paul - swap your nut across.

Whilst the rear axle is out you could do a trial fit and just see if you have any more clearance that way with the pipes fitted than you had on the right side.

Another tip from me is if the new pipes are cling film wrapped (mine were) leave it on during the trial fit when you first offer it up - less likely to scratch that new chrome if something is fouling it.

If you are still too close you might gain a few mm with a washer between rubber damper and inner pipe - but I think you will only get a couple in before you have used all the spare thread up on the fitting bolt.

p.s. don't rush fitting the four pipes - it's harder than it looks and an extra pair of hands for wriggling them about can be good if you have someone nearby.

That's a good tip form Mark, however, don't forget to remove that cling-wrap before you start the bike up. I have left it on just a minute too long and you end up in a right mess and it's difficult to remove.
