Rolling Chassis
Got quite a bit done in the last week or two and have as promised a rolling chassis to see for my efforts
Really starting to take shape now actually looks something like a bike again. I had the surface grinders at work
touch on to the brake disc to clean up the score marks and only took a couple of thou off to give it that "as new" look.
Got some bits and pieces back from Mikey that needed replating to finish off the carbs so they are next to go on.
Sorted most of the electrics apart from the tail light cos I am waiting for a new rear inner plastic mudguard to arrive
so I can finish the rear end. REALLY tempted to try on the paint set just to see how she looks but I will resist and leave
them safely under the bed, except the tail piece of course, until the last minute..... (yeah right!)
I will no doubt post the pics when I give in to temptation and stick them on and wheel her outside for a couple of indulgent photos. More soon
Managed to save the original brake caliper decal before I restored it then stuck it back on afterwards..... nice and original!
Replica Headstock sticker that sunrise graphics made for me now in place

Hi Dave
Looking very beautiful that is mister.
Are you going to paint the black in around the lettering on the engine covers?
You might want to remove the starter motor cover for a while - I would wait until the carbs are on and she is running. If not you run the risk of catching that nice chrome with sommat and scratching it.
Cheers from Mark

Cheers Mark,
Think I will fill in the paint on the engine covers and I have just found a thread on a Z1 restoration from
a few years back and got a great method of doing it. Just daub on the paint on the emblem not being
too fussy then leave a while to go off a little then dampen a cloth whith lighter fluid/thinners on a flat edge and wipe off the excess
leaving a good crisp finish. I will let you Know who it turns out.
Point taken about the starter motor cover mate

Progress been a bit slow this last week
work and family stuff taking me away from the garage.
Plastic rear inner mudguard and chain guard turned up so I was able to finish the rear end and tail light.
Tried the battery in and checked all the electrics work OK and all was going swimmingly until I
Hit a couple of snags ..... went to bleed the front brake and found that WD 40 and new master cylinder seals dont mix
topped up the master cylinder with DOT3 pulled the lever to start bleeding and found the lever didnt return as the piston was stuck in
Stripped back down and found seals had swollen to nearly twice thier original size
Probably due to me using
WD 40 instead of brake fluid to lubricate the seals as I rebuilt it a couple of weeks ago. Oh well lesson learned and another repair seal kit on order
In the mean time decided to set the carbs up so I searched the forums to find the best way of setting the float hieghts in the carbs and after a trip to the local pet shop
and aquarium bought the tube and plastic air fittings which were just the job see pics.
Nifty use of the chain oiler as a remote fuel tank
Exhausts are getting closer! Couldnt resist sneaking the side panels on just to see how she looks More later.......
Its ALIVE!
Yes that is a pair of pruning shears as a fuel pipe nipper!

Project update
Today was nice and sunny out so decided to fit the tank and seat and wheel the bike outside for a few snaps.
I have to say I am well pleased with the way its coming together. I have been waiting for some used original pipes
being shipped over from the states by Steve at Grampian Classics who I bought the bike from and they have arrived !
But its not great news as Steve has now had a good look at them and he reckons they're not in as good shape as he
thought they were with a lot more damage to them than he remembers from the photos that he saw of them when he
bought them in the states. I am waiting for some detailed photos from him before I decide to buy them and have them
restored or not. Another thing is they are actually stamped up 76 so they were originally off an A4, Oh and the baffles
are missing
so a bit to think about there
Anyway, got the chain and front sprocket fitted as well as the sprocket casing, chain guard and other bits and pieces,
So Here she is

Hi Dave
She is looking great now.
I would think twice about putting a set of pipes on that beauty that were in less than excellent condition - they will spoil your overall standard.
From my experience it is not a given that the stands will park correctly on the two left pipes so take some precautions before you try it out. Fingers crossed you will be lucky. Loose side stands park too high when the spring pulls them up. Main stand parking can be affected by used stands having been knocked upwards and the exhaust hanger bracket not being aligned correctly vs. swinging arm clearance. I have some measurements from Garn somewhere to tell you what gap between two exhaust hangers you should be seeing.
Cheers from Mark

. I am absolutely delighted with the result and should not have worried. No wonder they come so highly reccomended. Cant wait to get the motor together and in the frame so I can start bolting some of these goodies on. The job they have done was certainly worth the wait!
That is chroming Porn ... No need for dirty mags, just need to look at your chroming photos, from now on! I think i can fell something going on in my pants....
