Clutching at straws

Hi,
I`ve got a GPZ1100 B2 which is a bit on the rattley side, the noise seems
to be eminating from the clutch area, pulling in the clutch makes no
difference, just wondered if these bikes are prone to clutch basket
problems?
Any ideas welcomed.

Hello SMR610, the 2 main issues with the later basket are worn clutch fangs where the fibre plates dig in and wear the alluminium, the earlier baskets did not suffer from this as they are steel, the 2nd problem is common to both types and down to age, there are 6 springs which absorb the shock to prevent damage to the input shaft gears and with age these can sag or collapse, normally giving a rattly clutch, recon kits are avaialble to correct this, the good news is that you can remove the basket on the later J and GPz (earlier Z900/1000 require the crankcases to be split to enable clutch basket removal), Steve

Thanks for the info Steve,
I thought if it was a spring issue that when you pull the
clutch lever in the rattle goes although to be honest I`m
no clutch expert.
Regarding wearing on the basket where the clutch fangs
locate how much play is too much play?

Hello Allan, the 6 springs can rattle if the lever is in or out as the lever only lifts the pressure plate, the clutch basket is always in drive when the crank is turning, feel the edge of the fangs if they feel stepped or notchy then this is going to cause some roughness as the pressure plate lifts of the clutch plates.
