mainstand spring

anybody know an easy way to put a new mainstand spring on my z1, spent best part of two hours this afternoon trying to get the bloody thing on then gave up before i got to pissed of with it and got the crowbar out

Use a spring puller, failing that get a stack of 2p coins and bend the spring putting the 2 p's in the gap on alternat sides of the spring. \this will lengthen the spring.
Put the spring on with the stand up. When on pull the stand down and the 2 p's will fall out

hi Taffus, thanks for the reply i have heard of the 2p trick but the springs that bloody strong i car'nt bend the spring enough to get the 2ps or washers in the gaps, i'll have to find a way to stretch it enough to get them in

Chris, have you tried putting the spring on first, then attach the stand to the frame? It's often easier doing it that way. Get someone to help you as well, an extra pair of hands works wonders.

hi simon, that is the way i was trying to do it but could'nt pull the stand back far enough but i was on my own lying underneath and trying to avoid taking the exhaust of, i'll have another go at the weekend and get my lad to give me a hand, i'll have the crowbar on standby

I threw my spring away and put on a small bungy !!

Just fitted my newly plated spring,tried the coin trick but wasn,t easy to do as that spring is tough and the ends turn.Ended up fitting the spring and locating it in place using the frame as leverage,small bar or extension helped line the bolts up,once one is in the other is easier.Did it single handed,good luck

Just figured this out this afternoon.

Fit spring to loose stand and frame mounting.

Use a socket extension bar to leaver one side of the stand into position. Leave this in situ.

Go to the other side and align the stand using the bar as a fulcrum and this allows you to partly insert the stand bolt in position.

Go back to the other side and using the same fulcrum technique replace the bar with the other stand bolt. Check alignment and tighten.

Put one end of the spring in a bench vice and bend the other end over. Works for me.

Bit more work but with the exhaust off its a doddle
done mine the other day like that.

By far the easiest way Simon I use a tapered shaft in one side to hold it whilst you push the other bolt through !
