Thanks to all those who have made kind comments on this thread. It really does encourage me to say a bit more.

After the strip down, the first job was to get the lump to ProwlerZ1

this is when having a big lad about the house is useful - it went in the boot no problem

Within minutes of arriving Martin had set to work and had the outer cases off for me to take back for polishing by Mikey

Shortly afterwards, I got the news following the full strip down... the following was the list of parts needed

Cam shell bearings x16 13034-030
Idler wheels x2 12057-002
Top idler wheel x1 12057-001
Cam chain x1 21070-003
Piston circlips x8 92036-021
Inlet valves x4 12004-012
Gasket set full vesrah prefared
Eng oil seal kit
Top idler rubbers x2 92075-119
Top idler rubbers x2 92075-120
Middle idler rubber x4 92075-232
Bottom guide rubbers x2 92075-123
Slipper blade x1 12053-019
Center guide roller x1 12055-002
Tensioner wheel x1 12048-001
Cam end eye rubbers x4 92066-017
Breather /sump o ring x2 92055-052
Filler cap o ring x1 92055-049
Drain plug o ring x1 670b1508
Filter drain o ring x1 670b1505
Filter bolt o ring x1 670b2016
Oil pressure housing o rings x2 670b2018
Oil pressure take off o ring x1 670b2015

Some of these are eye wateringly expensive - but not as costly as a breakdown on an Autobahn...

To cap it all I then needed a cold start tube

Thanks to all who have helped me through the wanted section on this site...

Over the next few days I will put up some more pics as I try and get the thread into real time.

Martin stripped and rebuilt my engine last year. Let me assure you, Bill; you are in good hands. He will not be happy until you are completely satisfied.
Good supply of tea too.

Bill , I noticed you only have a single disc brake , Now the bike is stripped why not look for another disc + spilter + master cylinder as it will improve the braking :)

Good luck with the rebuild Bill. It will cost you an arm and a leg, especially the engine parts as you say, but it's a great feeling when it all goes back together again and makes it all worthwhile.

Nice choice of engine builder Bill, I would recommend Martin to anyone in the club wanting some work doing on their engine or carbs. Martin only replaces what needs replacing and he does not charge the earth for his labour.

I was ahead of you mate. Quite some time ago, I picked up a pair of very good condition discs, splitter, full set of braided lines the wheel centre dust covers and a 5/8 master cylinder some time ago with the intention of doing exactly what you suggest at the time of this rebuild. Then in the meantime I fitted a black shrouded braided brake line to the single disc(Hel), some decent pads, new fluids and got it properly bled and actually its pretty decent as it is. It will stop nicely on two fingers on the lever. In fact, I think not having "stoppie" powered front brakes actually keeps my speed in check on this bike and I can do the quick stuff on the other one...

Since stripping the bike and finding that it is near complete I have decided to restore to USA spec( from whence it came) and so will probably be selling the twin disc set up after this rebuild.

As Hobbo said earlier, was at Martins tonight dropping of my engine and yours after having them both ceramic cleaned at Smethurst's .

They are both very shiny items, looking forward to seeing mine back in the frame. Can't thank martin enough for doing the engine for me and also mikey for chrome work and zinc.

Had to keep an eye on Hobbo tho rummaging around in my shiny box of bits
