I am in the early stages of putting a 1976 Z900 back on the road. I bought it as a non-running project, see my other post. The electrics are completely shot having suffered from the twin effects of major bodging followed by what looks like a decade of neglect.
Rather than restore the original system, I am planning on designing a new much simpler system based aroung a Motogadget m-unit brain. I reckon I can throw away most of the original electrics and just have an m-unit, regulator/rectifier and starter relay plus wires, handlebar controls and the obvious lights and sensors. I also plan to fit a smaller and lighter lithium battery. I'll keep the standard generator. Has anyone else tried this? It should mean a much smaller wiring loom. I can also then make (or get someone else to make...) a simple aluminium or stainless box to go under the seat which will take the battery, m-unit, rectifier and relay, leaving a big space for storage. It shouldn't even cost much as the m-unit replaces so many other parts.
Suggestions/feedback/derisory comments all welcome.

Has anyone out there designed completely new electrics?
