Having listen to everyone I decided to take the head off and strip because that was worst part. This has gone to Griff's to be powder coated as he did my ELR and it looks great. Barrels are stuck fast and wont budge so it will be wire brush, scotch brite etc in situ. Casings look ok so will leave well alone.

I use Bicarb I got from http://www.angloscotabrasives.co.uk/ in my home made blasting cabinet (made from MDF the thick end of 20 years ago and still going strong!).

It works pretty well if I run the gun pressure fairly high (~80psi where for beads I use under 50psi) but creates a huge amount of dust. I have a dyson hoover plumbed into the top of the cabinet to collect the dust and after 15 mins of soda blasting it's getting clogged up and needs emptying.

Using beads or aluminium oxide it doesn't need emptying for many hours.

The finish with soda isn't as shiny as glass beads but on the positive side, the media does seem to dissolve and wash out very easily in warm water with no noticable residue.
