Hi, can any body help !!!

I am at the final stage of my winter full restoration of my Z1A.
While I had the covers off the engine for polishing I thought I would check the valve clearences. Not bad only 2 neded adjusting, looked in manuel, set all the marks and removed the cams, fitted new shims and put the cams back in as per manuel all markes lined up.

Now here is my BIG PROBLEM. Turned the engine over 350' and it locks up
and to make even more trouble the crank and cam then appears to be out of aline (no 1 inlet vale opening to early and hitting the piston) I have removed the cams and started again too many times to remember and even after excessive sleep to recharge the brain, still can not sort it out.
I have now remonved the chain tensioner and another thing to concern me is that with no tensioner fitted the chain is tight .
CAN ANYBODY HELP WHAT AM I MISSING?????!!!!!!!
P.S. the bike ran before I started the project

Sounds like the chain ain't on the crank sprocket right :?: :shock:
And on the 7th day... Zeds were created!

Have you got the correct cam chain?

I had the same problem some time back, you line the marks on the cams with the head, but when you do the bolts up the cam turns, so slack chain ends up at the crank, and it locks up when you turn it, try re setting the cams from the start again, but when you put the cams in the head check how much thay turn when you do the bolts up and see if the marks on the cams are still in the correct place flush with the head.

The cam chain was not on the crank sprocket properly.
all i did was to put the bike level (no main stand) with a jack and as i pulled left and right up and down on the chain my wife turned the crank with a spanner untill it all meshed together and the cams were all inline.

THANKS AGAIN should have the bike back on the road by end of month
