Z1000 frame number question

#1 PostAuthor: ZGAZ » Wed Jan 04, 2012 8:24 pm

I have a spare Z1000 frame which still has the American white sticker on it, so I assume it was imported at some time althougth I don't have a V5.
The number is KZT00A-02989* which according to the Zpower guide means it is a Z1000 A2 frame. The only thing that puzzles me is that on the American white sticker it shows the same frame number, but a date of 6/77.
I thought the A2 wasn't brought out until 1978, so does anybody know why the earlier date is shown?? Doesn't look as though anything has been tampered with. Any ideas? Thanks

ZGAZ, You are possibly correct, my info says...
Z1000-A1 made 27,500 frames and they started at KZTOOA-000001.
Z1000-A2 made 10,000 frames and they started at KZTOOA- 027500.
I found an old Data-base I had when I was a real Z nut and here is a couple of examples of frame numbers i noted.

10/76... Frame 005563
12/76... 011518
02/77... 018795
04/77... 022450
06/77... 025878
09/77... 033299
11/77... 033718

Another thing, Retailers always wanted to call the new model the latest year they could get away with, hence, you may find that the first A2 was in fact produced in 6/77, just as the first Z1000-A1 was produced around 9/76.

Further, I found recently on another forum that more than 10,000 A2's were produced .. More like 30.000. Also, for further confusion, I think the z1000 A1 & A2 frames were exactly the same

I was under the impression that most of he bikes for a particular model year were always manufactured during the previous year to enable them to be built ad shipped half way round the world. There were definiteley 1000 A1s on sale in the uk before the end of 1976 for example.

ChrisN1, You are right, it's a matter of who decides what year model?
The Z1 is commonly called a 1973 model, however, there were 3500 odd produced in 1972. It's pretty well the same with most bikes.
It gets more confusing around 1979....
All these models were designated '79's
Z1000A3 (MkII), Z1000D2 (Z1R-II) and Z1000E1 (Shaft).

All these were designated 1981 models...
Z1000J1, Z1000K1 (LTD), Z1000M1 USA model, Z1100A2, Z1100B1(GPZ).

I bought one of the last Z900s and it was registered in '77.

Some Z1000s hit the roads in '76.
