Z1A Oil Tank

Managed to get my hands on a oil tank for my restoration project complete with filler cap, dipstick and filter in pretty good condition but with some staining mostly from contact with the rubber dampers and retaining band. Tried all kinds of bleach and other cleaners with some improvement (see pics) anyone had any success with any other cleaning method? Would buy a unused one for £415.00 on ebay(I kid you not!) but a bit out of my league!



Have even tried Hydrogen peroxide 6% solution mixed to a paste with an activator and exposure to UV light. somthing I found on online to restore Faded plastic computor cases but no joy.

I looked into this a few years ago and concluded there is nothing that can be done. The nearest I found to a solution was this link http://retr0bright.wikispaces.com/
I tried it out but didnt get any noticable success, but I possibly had too weak a peroxide solution. I intended to get some real stong peroxide, but it was about the time of terrorist plots with peroxide...........so didn't bother.

Why would you want to remove these marks, staining,? these things make the bike " real " thats my view anyhow, Bob.

Be careful with the chemicals you are likey to degrade the plastic

If you look closely at the staining it looks like they are "in" the plastic rather than on the surface where the black of the rubber has leached into the white plastic. I think I will just have to live with it and as jon says cant be too careful with chemical cleaners on valuable plastic parts.
