Z1000 stator rattle

#1 PostAuthor: Tonka » Sun Aug 28, 2011 4:26 pm

Hi, I have a rattle/clatter from the engine that is there at tickover and when deaccelerating. It didn't disappear when I pulled the clutch in either.

I dismissed the idea that it may just be the carbs that need balancing due to the rattle/clatter still being there at higher revs and and as stated previously when deaccelerating. However the noise seemed to be coming from the stator housing so I was expecting to remove the cover to find the rotor mounting bolt coming loose but it seems tight enough.

Therefore could it be the rotor/starter clutch assembly - are these a comon fault/issue? :?? Are these clutches supposed to have much play in them?

Any help would be very much appreciated

I had this an Al (zorded) sorted it by punching the metal plate that covers the wires that come from the stator behind the 2 pins on the cover.

Are the 3 bolts that you are referring to the 3 Allen key bolts that hold the clutch to the rotor? If so that means that I will have t remove the main rotor mounting bolt?

Are you getting the impression that I have no idea what I am doing? If so your impression is correct :D

How do you pull off the stator/clutch assembly? The manual states that you need a special tool which I obviously don't have and tried levering it off but seems very tight on the shaft - ideas anyone please?

Hi pigford, top tip so BIG thanks to you. Eventually managed to get the rotor off and found all 3 allen bolts that hold the clutch to the stator very loose!

Unfortunately I have no loctite to finish the job off tonight but should be back on the road tomorrow ( well running anyway as it keeps intermittently raining here!

Also took the carbs off the Z1B today to see why no4 plug keeps fouling up
and found loads of debris in the carb so cleaned out all 4 carbs and refitted -
runs sweet as now

Good day all round working on the bikes. Even cleaned the duke as well

:D :D
