over heating
kawasaki 1075 the cylinder head has been gas flowed wiseco pistons, done about six hundred miles, new rings, dyna coils , dyna s ignition ,after about 30 miles this bike over heats then have to wait for the engine to cool down before start off again was clocked yesterday at just over 120 mph at 6 rpm has loads more grunt no oil cooler if i was to fit one do you think this would solve this problem or could it be something else anyone cheers paul
Not sure what you started with in terms of model/capacity, but assuming you are using the 10.25:1 pistons and with the mods you describe you are developing more power and thus more heat. An oil cooler is never a bad plan and I would recommend this..but ignition timing and carb settings may be the major influencers in what you are seeing. If the bike overheats in general trundle around / non thrash mode then you are not just looking at main jet settings, the needle position / pilot screw settings may be incorrect. You could try cleaning plugs then from cold go for 30 min avg run, and assuming it overheats check plug colour to see if it looks weak or rich etc..
If you think the carbs are correct then try retarding the ignition a bit at a time and see what diff this makes.
Not much help I am sure..but no single simple answer unless you are lucky. My 1105 runs hot but tolerable....main concern would be poor lube to pistons as oil can get vapourised if too hot. I have done 300 miles on m-ways at naughty speed, it's hot but no damage has been sustained over may years.
Good luck

Paul, my 1075 (Black Z1000) has a cooler. It didn't have one when I first got it, but the clutch cover used to get hot enuff to fry an egg
With the cooler fitted its no probs - maybe it don't get hot enuff when its cold out, frosty mornings, but I'd defo fit one from what you say

do you have a oil cooler on your bike ? the carbs i had on my z900 with no problems these carbs came of a z1r 28mm 150 jets the plugs are a nice colour there no popping or banging and runs smooth and pulls very strong its got loads more power than my 900 mark i do plan to fit a oil cooler but do you think not having one on a tuned engine is causing it to over heat also all the tuned bikes i have seen have them fitted

I chatted to Ray Debben about cooler sizes recently...he said that the standard cooler from a GPz1100 should be all you would need for 1170 kit...he implied that could go bigger than that too on stnd cooler...but personally I would be looking for a larger one for 1260cc and above.

Check the airways through the block and head - these may be blocked which will cause overheating.
Stick a cooler on it, size depends on cooler siting and airflow through it as well. If you put it in front of the head you may find your coils overheat due to restricting the airflow to them.

You shouldn't really have overheating problems with the spec you give.
I'd double check the timing and make sure the ATD moves freely as well as rich's suggestion of clearing blocked fins etc.
A half width ten row cooler will be big enough if you decided to fit one.
Do think you are a little large on the main jets though (i'd try smaller).
I run STD 28mm Z1R carbs with 125 brass mains and open filters and am still slightly on the rich side.
My current spec is 1075 wiseco's , Manzano race head ,fast road/race cams ,1mm bigger s/s valves, 4-1 pipe , Dyna coils and ign etc and no overheating prob's in the ten years + i've been running it

Had similar problems with a Z1000 engine that was lying up for a while. Checked timing and carbs and no improvement. Had to strip engine and work a piece of wire into the oilways from the cam chain tunnell left and right to rear of the exhaust valves, mooved some gummed up oil from the oilways and this cleared the overheating.

Looks like i have found the problem had a phone call from keithz spoke to him over the phone and he recommened that i check the coils which i did, also done some other checks that the oil was pumping properly to the top of the engine after checking the oil was pumping okay found a loose wire at the coil repaired this and have since been for a forty mile ride and everything looks fine so hope to put some miles on it now thanks kieth and all that answer my question still going to fit a oil cooler at a latter date cheers paul
