blowing fuses
can anyone give me a clue as to why my 73 z1 has started blowingthe main fuse. i fitted a dyna ignition and coils over the winter, the bike did about 500 miles then started blowing fuses. it runs for about a minute no probs then blows the fuse. tested the regulator and wasnt getting the correct results so bought a new reg/rec unit. just fitted it, started her up, ran for about 2 minutes and blew the fuse. any help would be greatly appreciated.
Classic leakage short somewhere does it blow quicker if you turn on the lights or indicators check oround the stem where the wires pass by the the tanks for signs of obvious heat, black bits etc trial and error and looky see is the only way but start with the circuit you disturbed to replace the sparkies

Try this chap
Replace the fuse with a 21 watt indicator bulb. As the electrical circuits are switched on the bulb will glow dimly, if a faulty circuit is connected the bulb will glow brightly. If the bulb glows bright with nothing switched on, remove wires from components in turn until the bulb goes out, the last one removed will be the area of the faulty circuit.
Apologies to Boyer but this does work Cheers Paul J

Can you outline above more in depth and how you fitted combined unit?
You should be getting 50 v ac across any 2 of the genny phases and no more than 14.6 v dc across the battery terminals when bike is running.

Try disconnecting the wires from the front brake presure switch ( on the splitter on the front yoke ) these can go down to earth internally.
You cn confirm this by testing each pin on the switch for continuity to earth - if you have continuity on either of the terminals switch is cause and you need a new one
