Battery Size?

#1 PostAuthor: cagimaha » Wed Mar 03, 2010 10:42 am

I'm after a small battery that I can hide away under the tail unit of my Z1R. Does anyone know what the lowest amp-hour rating you can get away with running a Zed. The only ancilliarys I'm using is the lights and a horn. All the indicators and associated gubbins have been removed. The only major draw on the battery will be the starter motor. I am quite happy to have a bit of a reduction in power on the starter because at the moment it will turn over for ages without seeming to loose any go. If it dosen't go on the starter then I don't mind having to use the kickstart! Ta in advance, Ben.

Ben, I don't know about the smallest size you could get away with, but I would consider a Gel filled battery. I believe it's safe to mount these on thier side. This may help you fit a larger battery in the space you have.

Yeah I've been having a scout about on ebay and through a few electrical suppliers catalogues and I think I'll take a punt on a 10Ah one. It should fit under the tail unit pretty easy and should still give me plenty of power for the electrics. I'll let you know how I get on!

Ordered the battery about half past 4, got an email of TNT saying it'll be with me by 10am tomorrow. I'll believe it when I see it but if it does then I'll let you know tomorrow night!

Right after yet another postage debacle I got the battery and it works fine. Turned the motor over for a minute constantly and was still showing 12.42v on my cheapo multimeter after that so should be fine I reckon, could probably get away with a 7Ah too I reckon as long as the bike starts pretty easily. Due to a schoolboy error on my behalf it won't fit behind the tail light like I wanted so I've decided to do the job properly and remove the starter motor and just have a kickstart only which will allow me to run a really really small battery which will definitely fit. That'll teach to measure twice and all that malarky

If you're going down that route, try Maplins - I got a small dry 12v battery for lessw than £15 for me Trumpet - its about 6" x 4" x 2" approx.
Its nice & small & runs the lights & horn easily

Pasc, yes the PowerBox is a great bit of kit  along with a Boyer ignition :| which is doing the business so far

I lied about the battery dimensions, its only 100mm x 50mm x 45mm  (4" x 2" x 1 11/16") approx :!:
