Fuel Tap repair kit..z1000a1

#1 PostAuthor: gordon62 » Sat Feb 20, 2010 11:50 am

Hi all,
I had a problem with my fuel tap, as to when turned off was still filling carbs, albeit slowly, anyhow bought a repair kit, which consist of 2 o-rings and 2 fibre washers, it would appear that there is only 1 o-ring and 2 fibre washers needed on the tap, anyhow my question is, looking at the tap in detail, even if I put the new o-rings etc in, is this going to solve my problem? because I cant see where the o-ring is going to help, as the fuel must be going past the white plastic/nylon whatever bit with the holes, this part is 2 bits with a spring, I think the fuel must be going pass this white bit, and still will after I fitted the o-rings etc? if it is worn, I know people have fitted kits on here and sorted the prob? the tap didnt leak externally just within.. any help advice much appriciated..
Andy..

I`m struggling to remember mine. Can you post pics.

There are holes that line up depending on main or reserve. That`s all I remember.

Andy i had the same prob so got the repair kit but mine also included the plastic ring with the holes you mentioned and the square shaped rubber gasket and that kit fixed the problem. so i think you are correct to assume the o-rings alone wont solve the internal leak. different bike but same leaking carb problem.

Andy the tap repair kit will not help with an internal leak, if fuel is getting to the carbs. when the tap is switched off it will be due to wear between the plastic cone and the tapered bore of the tap as you suspect, if the wear between them is not too bad the spring pressure should force the plastic cone into the bore and make a seal. As far as I'm aware you cant buy the cone but It's worth increasing the spring pressure to see if that helps, also you said that you had two white plastic bits whereas the cone should be one piece, if yours has broken let me know as I did have an old one somewhere but I don't know if It's any good even If I can find It.

Hi Steve,
the 2 bits I mentioned are the metal bit and white bit, with the spring in between, I could try stretching the spring, that may help, if not I probably get a new tap, z-power got genuine ones for £65.00
cheers,
Andy..

Hi Andy

Been trying to fix and do what the ham fisted ba****ds that built my house in 1936 should have done when they built it - if anybody says to me "they don't build them like they used to" I'll say bloody good job!!!!

Anyway no furhter with the Z unfortunately so the engine is still in bits on the bench awaiting rebuild - aiming for Kawasaki day at the Ace so I better get my skates on or I'll be going in the four wheeler as I've sold the ZX10 :(

Your more than welcome to pop in for a brew anytime but in the meantime I will see if I can find my old tap as we may be able to get one good one out of two bad un's. I'll let you know if I find it.

Andy, I have just seen a LTD petrol tap for sale on ebay and it looks the same length as your old one, perhaps someone fitted a LTD tap somewhere in the bikes past??
