Valve stem seals%&***%$£" *&^%$ *&^%

The last three times i have done this it got the better of me.
Tried faffing around with long nose pliers, screwdrivers and such and as my eyesight decrease and fingers are getting chubby i had run out of options and patience.

Yesterday i thought i'd try a different approach.

A 7mm drill, the blunt end of a 1/4 drive - deep socket and some vaseline.

I filled the void inside the stem seal with vaseline and pushed them home with the socket and a little bit of wiggling.

Only one took more than 60 seconds, ironically the one with the new valve guide in it!

If this isn't what your doing now i believe it could be worth a try.
If you fill the void space with grease, as it compresses it opens the seal up to allow it to slide on!

I slide the valve in from the other (right) side, put the seal on the top of the valve stem, a squirt of oil on the guide top and just slide and press it on with my thumb. The valve stem centralises it and just push the valve back up to put the springs etc on.

Fitted valve guide seals like that for years now....
I have a full range guide seal insert tools ranging from of 5mm to 7.5mm in ½mm increments that I turned up on my lathe.
It's so much easier isn't it Al

Just done the std head for me Lawson - fiddled about with the first seal (bit of oil helped) and realized I hadn't fitted the bottom spring seat first :??
Took a few tense minutes to get the seal off again - but managed it without ruining the seal :P
I just used me thumb & wiggled it about a bit
And on the 7th day... Zeds were created!

Bugger, wish someone had told me before. Still you live you learn. Onto the next one. Going to have a go at making up some clamps to hold the cams down so they dont strain the cam caps on re-fitting. A couple of top hat sections bolted to the cam cover screw holes and screw-adjustable guillotine type blades, unless anyone can suggest better or has a drawing or picture of a worked example!
