Project 2010. Z1000A1. 2011,2012,2013 and now 2014

#1 PostAuthor: KWACKERZ1 » Wed Jan 13, 2010 5:30 pm

I have had this for a long time but its my intention to finally get this completed this year!
As opposed to my other projects which I am still working on.
But I am excited about this one so here goes.

I aquired this from a guy who had it since the early 80's and its a z1000a1
1075 ape hd studs, flowed head 33 mikuni's Dyna coils and Ignition, 17" akront polished rims. JMC deep brace swing arm and koni dial a rides.
zzr11 forks and yokes and calipers.
The bad points are Weird clocks and instrument panel.
Tail pipe is made in stainless and I still cannot make my mind up if I like it or not. :?:
The silencer section is hidden under the engine so would probably look good if hidden by a bellypan.
Oil cooler is not connected.

The first stage was to strip it down completely and strip the rear footrest hangers off the frame (as they were rotten ) and clean it up for the kosman bracing kit.

Once the bracing kit was fitted, which was pretty easy as all the pieces came cut and shaped correctly.

The next stage was to prime it up so it does not go rusty whilst I get around to the dry build. So some expert help was called upon.
[img][/img]

The plan with this one is to fit,
Some even wider spoked akront rims that I have already got from a z750b twin
A different swing arm so I can get rid of the braced JMC
I have just got a XJR11 one that needs machining and wheel spacers making.

(Any suggestions of good places in LEIC AREA gratefully received.)

I have some zrx piggy back shocks to fit.
Ally modern footrest s and rear sets. (Have some R1 ones but not sure if I will use these)
A harris exhaust tail piece or get exhaust craft to make me a complete stainless one.
Straight bars or ace/clipons
New loom
modern rectifier
round headlight
proper zed clocks
13 row serck cooler
Bigger cams
Black or metallic blue and silver paint job

I also have a ZRX front end that I could fit but have yet to decide if to stick with the zzr front end or go with a zrx one.
But I have had Phil Denton make me up some spindles and spacers,
So I could fit either set, as the original spindle in the bike was rusty and home made badly :( .

engine wise
I have already had the cam cover off and had a look and its very good but will need one thread repairing adn reshimming when I fit my stage two cams. Originally the engine was built with stage 3 cams but they were to extreme for road use so it had std ones in it when I bought it.
So this is the start and hopefully this one won't take me two years.

JMC are nice looking bits of kit, and I have new bearings and orings end caps etc for this one I just don't like eccentric adjusters.

Preference I suppose so once I have the xjr one machined to fit I'll flog the JMC.

I have only ran the bike briefly to check the gbox engine etc not in anger.

However I have ran other stuff with 33's and they are fine,
I have recently been running a z1000 1075cc with flowed head and 33's with the ports matched to the carbs on standard cams and it runs really nice and smooth.
Not aggressive though like if you had big cams but good for a road bike if thats what you are running.

ZNUT With regard to the JMC I'll let you know, although the last one I sold went for £285 on ebay so would be looking for somewhere in that region!

How Long has this been ongoing????

Not sure why this project has been left languishing but I am easily distracted in between starting this I have built a Harris, a GSXR, stripped and modified my other zed, and recommissioned and sold a zx9r am currently in the middle of two other projects, one a complete restoration of a CB500 4 (for a mate) and the other a clean up and recommission of another 1000.

Anyway enough excuses this one really hit a stop when I reached the hard decision of what wheels to fit into the XJR swing arm and what forks to fit.

To be honest reaching the hard bit of needing to getting all the machining done always demotivates me as good machinists are hard to find who will turn the work round quickly and with quality.

However RS tyres in Oakland road Leicester is the place to go!!

Rob is a brilliant engineer who not only understands bikes but loves an engineering challenge. His main business during the "summer" is bike tyre supply and fit, so through the winter he occupies his time restoring bikes for customers, and now doing engineering jobs for me!!!

So here we go this should kickstart things as I now have a fully fitted rear wheel, with gsxr caliper and fully captive spacers!!!

The Sprocket carrier will need machining down to align the sprockets so Rob will do that once I know what I need.

I have the matching front wheel as well as I took these out of another bike and have decided to use RWU ZRX1100 Forks.

The plan now is to dry build it as I need to locate footrests etc. As my planned rearsets will not line up without some additional mods.

Hopefully the next phase wont take another 3 years

Nope much better!!

Seriously they are very similar 43mm forks the bike at the start of this had zzr11 forks and yokes. ZZR top yoke is stepped but the ZRX yokes are nicer looking and the forks have more adjustment (providing the bottom adjustors don't seize which is common).
Zrx11 forks are also 30.5" long which gives enough length to compensate for the smaller wheel. (I think zzr11 may be shorter)

The main difference really is that I can use different calipers as the zzr have the four pot tokicos but the zrx uses 90mm calipers so I can use 320mm discs and either 6-pots zxr7/tl1000/zx12r etc or four pot nissins gsxr11,triumph etc.
The main decision point for me was more adjustment, nicer top yoke, stem will fit with a bearing change and the fact that my front wheel will bolt straight in and my brakes fit with no buggering about!

Started on this again and piecing stuff together,
Backend in,
Image

Image
zx12r dymag 5 spokes 6" rim with gsxr 750 caliper.

Thought the front end would be a doddle,
zx11r yokes (straight fit with a bearing change, also missed the tank with the existing (non standard) lock stops.
so far so good!

ZX12R SPINDLE IN ZX11R FORKS no probs,

Then the wheel wont fit, the discs are spaced to wide, so took off the disc carrier spacers to get the disc aligned in the calipers, Bugger the zx12r disc are 320mm and zx11r ones 310/5mm I thought they were the same and this would be straightforward.

Image

I now have a few choices,
Sell the bloody lot and fit standard stuff, TEMPTING!!!!
Machine the disc outers, (but I'll still need spacers machining to change the offset!!!)
Spend a load of dosh and get custom ISR discs made.
Nothing is ever straightforward.
Oh and the battery box wont fit as it hits the bracing !!!!
And need new shock mounts to get the shocks in straight!!!!!

Have to say that you will also need at least a 3/4 or 7/8ths offset front sprocket and some serious frame notching for chain clearance to run that zx12 6in rim.

Stick with it Phil......not as though there's much rush;)

Seriously tho, if you get it put together that's going to be one spectacular 'Thou'!

Loving those wheels :)
