Hello boys, with regards to z1 prices falling....and I am almost embarrasssed to tell you this but one of the 73 z1's I restored for a collector last year sold for £16000 today. How much is a new Harley? or a mid range family car? Which of the three is likely to hold its value over the next 5 years? Well, without a doubt it will be the z1. Some of you will think it is a crazy price but a lot of work, time and expense goes into a concours bike and will bring the guy a tremendous amount of pleasure for a long time. I genuinely wish z1's were cheaper but it is supply and demand as usual. The less there are the more they will fetch so we probably wont see prices falling too much.

Interesting point from Gez.
The Stafford show in October just gets bigger each year, with more clubs, more traders, big Bonhams auction and i believe the biggest attendance since the show started in 1994. Take look in Classic Mechanics magazine, see how many businesses have set up selling classic bikes. Also, there seems to be more restoration companys than there has ever been. Seems the classic bike market as a whole is bouyant, especially where Zeds are concerned.
Compare that to the NEC bike show. Less trade stands each year,[no H****, Moto Guzzi, Aprilia, Harley etc....this year], fewer smaller traders, an air of doom and gloom with regards to new bike sales, generally not a good atmosphere.
Classic bikes [mostly], are great value for money, cheap to insure, reasonably cheap/easy to maintain and retain their value.

Well said Phil and Gez, classic scene has never been bigger, just need to identify the next 'Big thing' and buy em before the prices go stratopheric (a la Z1).

I think that the demographics are a big factor. Walking around the NEC earlier in the week most of the punters seem to be 20s and 30s looking at new bikes. The Stafford show and Classics in general attract an older probably more affluent set of people. Jap bikes are still good value when compared to the British classics which attract the rich pensioners. Prices of classic japs are only going one way. Look at Gold Stars, Aerial square four, Vincents, Brough etc and the silly prices people pay for a nostalgia trip.

Any bike that was the best in its day will always command a premium no matter how far down the road just look at Vincents of any type now, even the Comets are fetching big bucks the upshot is there will never be any more Zeds built there is a finite supply i cant see prices falling at all !!!!!

I think there will always be a high demand for original, standard bikes, and probably just as much for restored bikes full of new replica bits even though these do seem a bit fake to me, (and that's just my opinion).

Just seems a shame that a lot of genuine enthusiasts will be priced out of the market and the majority of early zeds will be stashed away as part some wealthy investor's portfolio

At least my Z1b is safe from the 'restore to 'original' and make a quick bundle' brigade, I've made sure of that

I thought they were the best looking bike made!!!! and i'm talking about the standard bikes not modified molested butchered up one's fitted with all sorts of usless ugly go faster stripes. and thats why i like them to look the way they were produced, nothing aganst the lads who do modify them good luck to them.

I recon it will be Jawa or CZ's next on the must have list.
At least they will be heavy enough to tie yourself to it when you throw yourself off the nearest pier because they didn't become the next collectors item or you see your mates first before they see you on one.
