HI Guys,
My Z1000 A1 is running the battery down, replaced the reg / rec with a new combined unit, replaced the stator, my wires were knackered any way, but still losing charge, I then noticed when I turn the ignition on idiot lights all ok, nice and bright, but when I position the kill switch to run the idot lights dim, Took apart the switch gear, thought it may be a trapped wire in the casing - seems ok, but to be sure, bench tested another switch I have off the bike same problem.
Put a meter across the battery 12 volts, turn ign on, ok, turn kill switch on, and it drops by two volts,
Any ideas?
Cheers
PJ

Hi PJ,sounds like mine used to be,i can only assume you have some kind of short,i have over come this by gradually checking the harness for breaks shorts and corrosion at connections, most of the connectors on mine are now soldered with just a few left to do,also very tight bends in wiring can sometimes create problems, there is also a possibility that its running to ground at the switch through the handlebars. No easy answer to this.good luck.
Volt drop.
PJ,
Make sure before doing any tests the battery is good? and charged.
Disconnect the new reg and stator, do you still get the volt drop of 2v?
(just because its new it doesnt mean its not faulty)
Measure the volts coming off the alternator before they go into the regulator? using the ac240v reading you should get about 50v AC.
Check the resitance between the three leads coming of the stator it should read .45-0.7 ohms (pre1978 bikes) and 0.5-0.7 ohms (79+) check one pair is not shorted or open circuit.
Do youre wires still run through the bars ? maybe one of them is shorting inside disconnect the switch gear at the frame side and buz each wire down to earth to see if its shorting. Hope this helps Cheers Phil

firstly what condition is the battery? old or damaged batter e.g. one that was overcharged as a result of faulty reqgulator - will not hold charge. since you replaced the regulator, I would guess you had it fail? Have you checked electrolyte leven in the battery?
the above voltage drop - if one set of points is close, then you a loading the battery with a coil so you may see voltage drop.
Also if you had a clean short, you would see smoke come out of the wiring.
The way to trace the fault is remove negative terminal and put miultimemter in series in amp mode then remove fuses, connectors and bulbs iuntil the current is seen to drop.
