Swapping petrol tanks

#1 PostAuthor: nigel bessant » Sat Nov 14, 2009 9:28 pm

Hi, does anyone know whether a z900/z1000 petrol tank will fit a 1979 Z1000 ltd without modification? Why do I ask? I think my ltd will look better with the wider tank. And that seat!! I've a real problem with them! Will a Z9/1000 seat base fit the hinge positions?
Thanks
Nigel

from memory Nigel. i tried a std tank on a ltd and it didn't fit, I didn't persevere with it so can't remember why.... think seat was ok though.... I am talking about round cam cover bikes btw.

Stucoa put a 1000A2 paint set on his LTD. Direct fit apparently.

I think that the pins where too wide or something, there defiantly was a problem. mind you that tank had been modified underneath because some dick (me) had braced an A2 frame and tank wouldn't fit that either.
Have you got another set then Nigel or just thinking of it.
Someone else asked the same question a couple of weeks back.

there are a lot of ltd bikes dressed up with a1/a2 tank, panels and seat come up on ebay, thereis one on at the moment. £1700 no bids, been on a while, no bids because you can tell its the ltd drssed up. the ones i see are the early rounded cam versions though. maybe its just the early ones.

The early LTD (round cam covers) are cool, coz they just took the std Zed and whacked on a few tarty bits  (like wheels & tank & seat, etc) but left the frame alone - more or less :!: So its fairly easy to get them looking non-LTD if thats what you want :P
And on the 7th day... Zeds were created!

Hi All
Thanks for the info, my ltd is is the squarer topped cam covers and slightly differing engine covers. it's the tailed version with the same side panels as a Z9/Z1000. It's got the switchgear with the hazzard flashers (WHY!?!?!?). Oldkawman says it;s got a Z900 front end, its got the short front mudguard. The grabrail is not the Ltd version (I know this as my Z1B had a ltd grab, I prefer them personally), it is a low version with tabs welding on to accept the indicators. Headlight does not have the "ears" type of brackets. It has the ridiculous humpty dumpty humpback seat (sorry if I've offended anyone who likes them), alloy wheels and the narrow tank. My intention is not to try to fool anyone, more that I think the wider Z9 tank would improve the look. At least with a ltd you can fiddle with it and not incur the wrath of purists. I'd not do anything like that to a Z1, its siblings or a classic Zthou. We all like different things at different times of the day at different stages of our lives. A bit like when you see a fitty out jogging and half an hour later you're staring at the voluptuous girl with the hooters in ASDA
