Running rich

#1 PostAuthor: kiwiz » Mon Mar 12, 2007 7:07 pm

Have been doing a lot of around town riding on the J since the top end rebuild and have noticed it was beggining to get difficult to start . Pulled the outside plugs and found these were very sooty.

Since I have been running it without the filter but it seems to make little difference.

When I installed the Wiseco kit I was concerned that the higher comp pistons might run lean so I dropped the needle on the vacuum carbs 1 notch. Is this likely the cause? If not where should I start?

The carbs were all dismantled and cleaned by blowing compressed air thru the jets whilst the top end work was undertaken.

Kiwiz, return carbs to previous setting, raise needle (drop clip) again and check pilot (air) jet is clean, if blocked will make running rich on 0 - 1/4 throttle. Needle effects 1/4 - 3/4 throttle. Float heights OK? May need hotter plugs for town riding in winter, NGK or Denso? as there was a big debate on the plug subject recently (again).

Pigford,

P thanks for your reply.

Isnt it correct that to lean the mixture I should drop the needle (ie raise the clip)?

Having said that I did enrichen the mixture perhaps unnecessarily, so I will put the clip back into the centre notch.

The plugs I am running are NGK B8ES. Do you feel these are too cold for around town? Frankly I have never seen denso plugs on sale here

Also I have never checked the fuel level. I assume you do that by connecting a clear hose to the bowl drain plug and seeing how high the fuel level is afainst the side of the bowl.

Kiwiz, yeah, sorry, I got confused! Raising needle makes it RICHER!
Plug heat range is a bit controversial. If you're already using B8ES, a 7 is hotter, it may help as long as you aren't doing motorway/fast riding. Its best to address the carb problem first and plugs later if all else fails.
Could also be a weak spark or dodgy plug? Check if they're all sooty.
The float height can be measured with bowls off, which is probably best.

Thanks for your interest.

I will have a look at the carbs first then the plugs. I hope I can get the tops off the carbs without removing them from the bike. The struggle with the airbox ruubbers can be a bit memorable

Put air filter back in, replaced B8ES with B7 ES (hotter) raised needle one notch

So far bike seems to run much smoother although this may be the effect of clean plugs. Had a look at plugs after a bit of a run around town (not high speed though) and these seemed very clean with the ceramic still white but no sign of any overheating (nor would I have expected any given what it had been doing).
