Throttle cables

How important is it to have both throttle cables installed for setting up the carbs, ive always thought the carbs had a strong enough return spring to negate the need for a closing throttle cable :?:
Want to give the carbs best chance of being right after ginger bear has
ultra sonicaly cleaned them and i have the rebuild kits on their way.

Mikey, for initial static set up it'll be fine but to set them up properly with the engine running you will need both cables installed as there is a direct effect on the carbs. by the engine vacuum. If you ever have to ride the bike without the closing cable you'll realise just how much it is needed to allow the slides to overcome the vacuum and return properly.

Mikey, I recon that it'll be fine to run to get it started.... As long as the spring is half decent :wink:

TBH I thought so too but have discovered it is not thecase - wot ^^^ says about the vacuum seems a good explanation.

I have overhauled my carbs recently and found that I can snap open the throttle, then release the engine was still idling at 2.000 rpm - this was without adjusting the two cables.

Since then I have adjusted the closing cable so it is taut and the problem has gone away.

So it does appear that even with the strong return spring, the closing cable needs proper adjustment.

Thanks guys, what 02GF72 said about revs still hanging at around 2,000 rpm after shutting off is one of the problems with mine so a shut off cable it is then

I have had this problem for years, with different bikes... You overhaul the machine, setup the carbies and you get this lag where the throttle does not seem to snap back. I'm sure I used to adjust the timing and stuff around with with everything else. I've even asked the forum about this run-on problem!

Maybe I should have this return throttle cable taut as 02GF74 suggests.
I'll give it a try next time.
