How to refurbish clocks on A4

#1 PostAuthor: tonyzx12r » Fri Oct 09, 2009 9:22 pm

Hi everyone. I want to refurbish my clocks on my A4. The rev counter is faded. Can anyone tell me the best way to do this. I notice on ebay you can buy stick on replacement covers for the clocks. Has anyone used these, do they look original when fitted. Thanks for your help. Tony

Most people can fit a face, and they are available.
the promlems are;
How do you remove the band?
How do you remove the needle?
How do you replace the band?
Where do you buy a new band, if needed?
How do you match the speedo with the tacho band?
Not so easy!

Yes, it can be difficult. However, if you can find a speedometer specialist who can peel the old band off then it becomes much easier.
I found a shop many years ago in Melbourne who installed bands that I bought from a motorcycle instrument specialist. In fact, they told me that had I not cut the existing bands off they could have removed and re used them.

      So, in short:
How do you remove the band?
Cut off or better still have it peeled off by specialist with proper equipment.
How do you remove the needle?
Carefully pry off using even pressure on each side. Small spoons are good for this.
How do you replace the band?
Once again, have it re-fitted by a specialist with correct tooling.
Where do you buy a new band, if needed?
Doremi Japan supply exact stainless steel repros. I'm sure that Zpower, Z1 Enterprizes or someone else could supply these.
How do you match the speedo with the tacho band?
The Doremi bands are identical so no problems with matching.
The main problem is finding a specialist who will remove and reinstall bands without insisting on you paying for a "full internal rebuild". They WILL try to milk you for money even on instruments that only require a cosmetic refurbish.
Secondly, anyone can fit a new face if they can operate a phillips head screwdriver....the problem is that all of the replacement facias I have seen are complete crap.

repro clocks, both speedo and revometer have appeared on ebay, about £ 60 - may be worth a look - I posted about this in the last week or so.

it depends how much you want done

getting that needle off is a dodgy job.

have recently done a small refurbishment myself on a set of clocks.
its easy to spilt them,(using a small screwdriver) wipe the glass clean the clock covers and bring the black back.
you can also get red stickers to go over the faded red parts,
      (off whatever on this site)
. spray the covers and put back together.
then get a someone to press them back .
or if you want them fully serviced and replaced I would recommend go to AL.
zed the best ride of your life ...... so far
