gear lever

#1 PostAuthor: sweptail » Fri Sep 11, 2009 10:08 am

The splines on my gear lever shaft are worn. The lever slips on the shaft even after fully tightening it.I am going away on the bike this weekend so i need a fix just until i get a chance to replace the shaft. Any suggestions?

Quick fix

Hi Tommy

One suggestion is to try and fit a shim between the shaft and the lever. You may not get something all the way around but certainly just enough to clamp down on. I've used part of a thin feeler guage before as a quick get me home job. Lasted for ages.

Whilst its not something you would normally do, I have seen people put a spot weld on the end of the shaft to attach to the shaft and the lever.
It is then easy to remove (but buggers the chrome on the lever :?? )
I have seen this hold kickstarts in place so it would be a secure "bodge" that would last you youre trip.

It's not something I would do, but desperate measures are sometimes needed to ensure you can get away from the daily grind and get out on a roadtrip.

Thanks for the input. I like the needles idea.
Is it a big job to replace the shaft?

the trouble with welding it on,is that sometimes it weakens the shaft and they snap off.
