Just to prove the skeptics (not Septics) wrong.....

I am refurbing the front brakes on me ELR........ They have been painted white at some point... and look sh*te

The brakes were about 6/10 on me last ride out..... and now I've stripped them I can see why.....

Image

The pistons were really manky (the left one is after I spent 5 mins trying to clean it up) and pitted. :??

I ordered new sets (£60 for both pistons & seal kits) from www.wemoto.com on Friday - late am - and they turned up next morning :P Got a large tin of paint stripper, so will be working on them soon.

My engine will be grit blasted this Wednesday (hopefully) so can start assembly this weekend, all bits now ready - O rings/seals.. etc
And on the 7th day... Zeds were created!

Dave, I know what you mean..... I take it in bite-sized stages

Got some more PJ1 - satin black, so can finish off me spraying engine tomorrow (at work)

Gonna do the calipers too.... :P Then get the stuff home ready for the XMAS assembly....

Mark, don't paint yer calipers.... I made that mistake myself .... you're bound to drip some fliud on 'em and then they will be .. er unpainted in bits ... talk to Griff's Reality Motorcycles in Kingswood and get 'em vapour blasted and powder coated ... it really is worth the expense - they look original and will stay that way :D And it's prolly less expense than you might imagine  Also learn from my mistakes and stick in some stainless bleed screws, wish I had ... I'll change mine in the spring when I do my annual fluid change

Tell you what, last time I used a set of WISCO pistons we weighed them to make sure and one of them was out by a few grams. Had to machine a bit off to get them evenly balanced. Not saying this is common, but worth checking before you bung them in.

Magnum..... I weighed mine  The scales are calibrated and measure to 0.1g...
I did pistons with wrist pins and they were all within 0.2g....

Ralphy.... Cheers for the advice, but a couple of hours too late
Painted them today at work :?? I'll take Jappens advice & give silicon stuff a go.... nothing to lose now

Is there a laquer that can be used :?:

Pig. I used PJ1 porcelain hard paint.

I`d much prefer to do things again than something more permanent that I have to live with................................like plastic coating

I'd be very careful about the effect of non-standard brake fluid on your seals. I don't know of any lacquers that are any less vulnerable to the effects of nice fresh brake fluid. I suppose you could do what I did, put 'em together, bleed 'em up, spill a small amount of fluid, wash it off, curse then take 'em all apart again and send 'em off for plastic coating

If you are going to silicon you will have to replace all seals.

Perhaps I'll cover them in a nice Tesco bag whilst bleeding them :|

Don`t listen to Ralph, he`s just clumsy :!:

Use a pipe to vent off in to your milk bottle or whatever and have some brake cleaner handy.

Also helps if the paint is dry before you try filling `em with fluid.

Mark - looking at the state of them it'd probably be worth chucking them in a bin and looking for something else :D

you could allways fill them from the bottom using a syringe which should in theory expel any air bubbles into the master cylinder as the fluid rises.
might try that on mine as they have just been freshly painted, just waiting for stainless pistons to arrive.

I use a vacuum bleeding system, and in a perfect world I would never drip any fluid anywhere, but in the real world the stuff has a habit of dripping un noticed from the side of the bottle on to your gloves which then transfers to .... and sooner or later the spanner you pick up just touches the freshly painted calliper and Oh shit, get me detergent and fresh clean water quick .... oh shit, that fekking drip was only on there ten seconds and ... fek, fek, fek :grr :grr :grr :grr :grr :grr If a part lives in an environment where it's likely to come into contact with the world's best paint stripper, doesn't it make sense to use a covering that's not ... er vulnerable to paint stripper?
