Valve cover gaskets

#1 PostAuthor: cra-z1 » Sun Sep 28, 2008 1:00 pm

Trying to reduce the seepage at the valve cover gasket. Seems like oil is wicking through the paper gasket. I am using an aftermarket gasket and have billet end caps. Not sure who made the gasket, but it was blue in color. Does any one have a concences on quality? OEM vs aftermarket. Which seals better? What have people done to reduce the wicking affect?

Where's the oils coming from? It leaks from mine from around the billets and I understand if you put a groove around them for the silicone to go into it makes it better.

I have already machined a groove in the billet end covers. I use copper high temp silicon in the groove. The oil is just wicking around the entire gasket. Not much but enough to leave a noticable trace of oil on the head and cover. Some places I get a little run down the head after a two hundred mile ride. I would just like to have as little as possible to wipe up. I know my Z1's in the 70's had the same type of wicking, but back then I didn't worry to much about it.

Is the breather system OK? If so I would check the faces and stick a new gasket on it. I usually work some grease into mine to soften them up a bit before I put them on.
