noisy dyna coils

#1 PostAuthor: GregZ » Tue Jun 24, 2008 2:25 am

Just installed dyna coils, wires and the ignition pick up. Zed is running real good. However you can hear the coils, and it is rather loud. At first I thought is was cam chain so I adjusted not once but twice. finally found the tat tat tat niose is the coils. Is this normal sound from coils???
cheers

Did you insulate the mounting post? as it is extremely close to the terminal and is a likely area to short, although you wouldn't expect the bike to run too well if it was.

Money's on them shorting out, and if its that loud its gotta be on the hi-tension side (coil lead output)
But as Steve say's, check the low tension input ( 2 x screws) coz the lower one is close to the mounting post :!:
And on the 7th day... Zeds were created!

I put heat shrink on the mount bolts, spacers and after tightning the power screws I siliconed them. I will double check everything.
thanks

I found my problem. The spacers(hardware store) are two thick in diameter. When fitted loose they fit good but when tightning the coils to the frame they seemed to draw in a little bit and just make contact with the screw for the power wire. I replaced them with stock spacers but I had to use some extra washers so coil does not make contact with frame.
No more noise. If you are still running points I would highly recomend the dyna set up. With the denso plugs and the eletronic ign. Zed runs good !
Cheers
