Z1R carbs

#1 PostAuthor: Kwakdave » Fri Oct 30, 2015 12:02 pm

Hi can anyone help here to identify the differrence between Z1000 A1 carbs and Z1R carbs from the outside or code number. i know if i took them off i could measure them as Z1000 are 26mm and Z1R are 28mm. Just bought a Z1000 and on the list of bills it says Z1R carbs have been fitted, any ideas please?

The only clue to Z1R 28's would be the air mixture screws on the side of the carbs.
Some earlier 26's have these but if there's no air mixture screw at all then they are not 28's.

Usually the Z1000 26mm tick over screw is on top of the carbs, the 28mm tick over screw is underneath the bodies

Bike has arrived, carbs have throttle stop on the underside with pilot screws on the side. Bike runs great once past low running but needs setting up, anyone used Z1R carbs on a Z1000 A1 with a 4-1 Marving exhaust? or any other tips for setting up crbs would be appreciated, thanks.

Fitting the Z1R carbs makes the 1000a engine the same spec as a Z1R, there's no difference in cam profile etc etc.
Make sure the pilot fuel circuit is clear, balance the carbs and maybe go up a size on the mains if a plug chop shows it needs it.

I used a set of Z1R carbs on a Z1B for years with 112.5 main jets and 17.5 pilot jets with no problems :)

Carbs off now to check the pilots as too rich low down, they are 28mm Z1R and thank you for your help with the identifying. The pilots are 15 but are new, maybe from a repair kit which i have been told by a guy who knows, that these kits are good for the gaskets but to throw away the jets as they are rubbish, if so i need to find origional 15 pilots for these carbs. Anyone have any to sell or advice to give would be appreciated thanks.

Update, i now find receipts from Debben performance that this engine was fitted with 389 performance cams, adjustable sprockets and bigger stailess valves with the ports and seats cut and blended, WOW what a bonus. Took the cam cover off and the cams ae marked Made in USA, CWC with a 22 in an oval circle and EF14 or maybe EP14 markings. Measuring the lobes they are 28mm side and 37mm tall forgetting the points bit. Valve clearance are set to 6 thou spot on. Later today i find out it is a Z1R engine in a Z1000 frame, should have spotted the D in the engine number i guess. I love these little surprises, enjoy the research but any help on what cams they might be and carb base settings, even cam timings would be appreciated, the sprockets are set to midway and the lobes are horizontal at TDC as they should be. Used to have a GS with fancy cams etc and that was fun to play with but now got a beutiful bike to play with, when the carbs are back on and sorted i will take a pic of it and share it if you like. Thanks for any advice or help in getting me there would be appreciated.

After more research they are Kent cams KAW16, ports have been blended out to 32mm from the enlarged valve seats and stainless valves. I love a challenge when it comes to setting up.
