dyna coils

#1 PostAuthor: sp.milne » Fri Mar 01, 2013 2:41 pm

Hi all
Had the tank off today to set the valve shims, noticed both coils are trying to divide in half. Though not ideal the bike still runs OK, did have a issue with it cutting out while sat in traffic on a very hot day. Do you think it is coil related as both would have to go down at the same time. The bike has electronic ignition and I was suspecting this to be the problem.Any help would be much appreciated

If as I suspect that the coil's have seen better days has any one got a pair they would like to sell

Thanks Stuart

I'd be interested to see if spacers were used between the coils & frame mounts. If they weren't, then bolting them directly to the frame without spacers will distort the steel/iron bar & hey presto.....

I agree.
Definately stress cracks to open like that.
If they are still working just fill the gap with some nail varnish or similar , fi glass resin etc and then release the mounting bolts to let the gap close and seal ,then refit with some washers under spacers to lift the body clear of the frame.
Should be good for a few more years use after that.

As Rob says - fill the gaps & should be fine.

Modern Bandit coils are pretty damned good apparently
And on the 7th day... Zeds were created!

The bike will also cut out if the coils are not tight to the frame after about 30 miles ,this was happening to me on my z1000, and i kept thinking the engine was getting to hot but this was not the case

Sp.Milne, you didn't confirm that the coils were, indeed, incorrectly mounted as Ginger bear suggested. I can't think of any other reason the coils would have cracked like you have shown.
There must be a good commercially available electrical insulation you can paint on, other then your nail vanish/ polish!

Was the spacer removed because of the close proximity to the terminals where everyone usually fits heatshrink to prevent shorting onto the spacer.

Just had a quick look at the mount's, they look the same as the bear's pic's. At a lose to see why they cracked.
If you look close at my first pic you can see ths spacer

Could well have been! I've had the bike for around 8 or 9 years & they did'nt
Look new then.
