Starter clutch parts

#1 PostAuthor: Z1B Alan » Mon Feb 04, 2013 3:08 pm

So I have managed to strip my rotor off the bike to reveal the starter clutch rollers I have a number of questions so please go easy
1 I was able to remove the rollers etc without splitting the rotor and starter clutch is this normal.
2 There dose not seem to be any visable flats on the rollers only some disscoloration on one roller is this normal.
3 All the springs seem to be equal length.
would the clutch give ramdome problems with the above. I intend to replace the parts "just in case".
They run, They break , You spend and so it goes on

it is normally the starter gear that causes the problem. check the surface where the rollers grip the gear ( machined surface should be perfectly round )turn the gear with your hand + grip the machined surface with you fingers if you can feel any unevenness in the surface it is scrap. also the rotor surface wears + causes the rollers to stick. just clean the rotor surface with some wet & dry until you have a smooth surface

Your battery needs to be in very good condition in order for the starter to spin at the correct speed for the clutch to work correctly, also your starter must be at its best.
Make sure the rotor bolt is correctly tightened, use thread lock,on reassembly.
