hi, a question for the collective, while checking the front brake pads on my a4,i noticed there,s no shim behind the pad on the piston side,is this correct ? i checked a spare caliper i had and that was the same, going by the haynes manual i,ve got ( z1000 manual) it shows a shim confused or what
plus both the calipers have different looking pistons ,pictures below.
caliper fitted to a4,
The first picture shows the piston with an insert inside which was designed to stop the squeal. If you buy a NOS piston it will not have this insert.
I have not seen the second piston in the pic before but could it have another type of insert ?
Sometimes when you buy pads they have the shim you are missing. Maybe ask Z Power next time you order some to send a set with the shim. The pad in that case would have a peg on it to secure the shim.
None of these things are necessary and none of them stop the squeal. Copaslip is the only thing that does !
Hello,
My Z1-R had the second type of piston. I seem to remember reading it was to stop heat transfer from the Sintered Metal break pads that came into fashion about them.
