Alternator cover question
I had some oil leakage from the grommet at the lower rear of the alternator cover. After draining my oil for an oil change, I pulled the cover, pulled the grommet, cleaned and degreased very well etc, and slid everything back into place with loads of the best goo I could find. Cleaned off the old gasket material, replaced the gasket with the addition of a light smear of sealant. OK. Worked fine at first. Then leakage. A careful examination tells me the repaired grommet is not the culprit. It appears to be coming from th gasket area right at the bottom. I can only assume the gasket tore or folded or something during the process and I did not catch it. My question is this. If I pull the cover to fix the gasket issue without first draining the oil, how much will I lose? A bit, a lot? Possible to do at all?
