Mark

I've always done a bit o wirin'. My experienece is that the worst wiring on the planet is always found on sailing yachts. The myth that those with yachts have loadsa money is bolix. Cos most yotties haven't a preverbial pot to get taken short in, they will alwasy have a crack at anything. The older the yacht, the more abuse they have suffered from the hands of those that have greater enthusiasm than knowledge.

Wiring is easy as long as you know the basics. The first rule is never, ever, ever use those fak aweful pre-insulated terminal/spade/bullet thangs they punt to the unwary in auto shops.

I would be very happy to give you a hand with wiring yer zed Mark, an I reckon I could get you to be a confident bike wiring fellow in no time :D

Give me a shout when you're ready to crack on with it. If you're loom is burgered , maybe it might pay us to build two together. Everything worked on my bike ... but for how long? She had popped a couple of fuses with no obvious reason and after seeing the state of the dynamo cabling I think it might be sensible to think that thirty years is a long time for wiring in a harsh environment :!: I've got all the kit and it's just a case of figuring out exactly what's required, ordering it and getting on with it.

Unless others know of more zed specific suppliers, I have always found Vehicle Wiring Products to give great service and seem to keep loads of stuff including Japanese bullets which are differ from regular ones.

Best go to bed as have to do real work tomorrow :(

Hello Ralph, I have many of the colours for wiring, black and yellow is one that seemed hard to come by and eventually found some but only on a massive reel, we can supply most colours by the single metre at 26p, also read about your adventures with the snapped crankcase bolt, a full set of replacement 6mm crankcase bolts is available for ?19.95 http://www.debben.co.uk/acatalog/Z900.html#a102, these high tensile steel socket cap screws that have been bright zinc plated and de-embrittledlated so are much stronger than the originals, especailly as the originals start to detereorate with age. The second gear problem is one that has caught so many out, we must get at least 1 call a week from worried owners, Regards, Steve

VWC will supply the new style plastic block with a latch and the female connector has a spring plate built in. You can also get the old style connectors from them but not the plastic blocks. All the colours you need for wiring and the thin wall is very good (strand count up to take more current for the same area).

Silicon covered is very good for the alternator cables as it is not affected by heat or oil, but the only place I've found to buy it is RS. Soldered under cloth braiding as you suspected.

Thanx for the advice chaps, and Ralph, I'd be grateful for some wiring assistance  I also use Vehicle Wiring and have some of their stuff in the garage, as I'm not a total wiring virgin, just wanna do it right :P
And on the 7th day... Zeds were created!

Steve

I was having a gander at your site and noticed you do a taper roller head race set "Steering bearing set, BRG-1231.A" which is marked up for the Zed nine - will it fit a Z1000A1 :?:

Do you have a lists of colours, lengths et al for building a new loom? Do you supply the plugs, covery bits etc :?:
