Before you do anything else you MUST take the cam cover off & check your valves. A stuck valve will be visible as being much lower than the rest when the cam lobe is point away from it.
Turn the engine over slowly, with a spanner on the end of the crank. You've almost certainly bent at least one valve !

Two bent valves and a cam chain that doesnt run true. Two links have siezed up.
Could be worse i suppose :shock:

Sorry to hear the bad news Andy, you are right though it could have been worse, will you split the engine for the cam chain or will you use one with a soft link?

but a soft link is certainly easier. has anyone had any problems with one?

As piggy says if done propperly the soft links are good, hopefully it will be running again soon, i have a few of the cam cap studs kicking around if you want them, the ones in the head are the first set i made i did not change them as they done the job and run for the 5/6 years i had it on them, i made some more and found some of them the other day, i still wish i had kept the old nail myself.
