Maintenance Free Battery

#1 PostAuthor: Skunkwurcx » Mon Mar 30, 2009 8:48 pm

I'm pretty sure the battery has gone the way of the DODO in the Z. It rolls over okay after a good run, but anything less than a 10 minute run at speed and it is very slow to roll over.

I've ordered up a maintenance free battery for it, but before I buy it I want to ask if they are okay for our bikes. It seems to me I read somewhere that they are not okay for them, but I can't be sure, and I also can't remember why if indeed they aren't.

Can anyone set my mind at ease one way or the other ?

Ta,
Andrew

edit : '77 Z1000 btw...thought it was in my sig :D

I've got an Odessey dry cell battery which had a got cold cranking rating (essential for starting) and although not on bike long.... seems OK
And on the 7th day... Zeds were created!

i had a Odessey dry cell battery on the vmax that i had and it was far better at starting it when it was hot, ( max,s are a b#gg#r to start when hot ) i sold the bike and it had been on for 4 years and still spun it over as fast as the day i bought it,if the z need a bat that is the one i would buy again,

Mick, maint free isn't the same as a gel battery. A maint free battery is usually just sealed so you won't need to top up with acid occasionally. Hope this helps.
ps reading some of your thoughts and posts I'd say you've possibly topped up your acid enough already. :)

battery

Another advantage of a maintenance free ( sealed type battery ) there's no breather pipe and top up caps so therefore less corrosion around the battery area :D p.s Does the Odessey battery fit in the battery box properly ?

I forget the brand name of the battery that my dealer ordered, but it supposedly has 30% more cranking amps than a normal one, and it is also $30.00 more that the maint. free batt. that I put in the ZX9 a few weeks back - just goes to show, nothing is free !! not even a few amps.

I'll post when it's in the bike with name and fit and all that.

You can buy a Yuasa for forty quid, tried and tested.

Yuasa are good, but I wanted the flexibility of mounting in a different orientation. Also, coz I don't use the bike thru winter the abililty to hold charge for a long time was important. Also I love all things technical & soopa doopa

I got a PC545 for the Lawson, but I think a PC310 is for Z1000's :?:
