Carb overflows

#1 PostAuthor: Wayne1960 » Wed Jun 04, 2014 7:03 pm

How long should the carb overflow pipes be? I got some pipe from ZPower but it looks tight for length.
So ow long should they drop past the frame?
Just purchased a 1976 UK Z900 A4 for renovation. Wish me luck.

no 1 carb is has the longest & as you go through to no 4 they get shorter fit no 1 first & push it through the rubber strap that fits on the upper right side engine mount the down the back of the engine & cut the pipe about 50mm below the engine

Ok done that but they hang awfully close to the exhausts! Am I little too long still
They all pass through the rubber loop and hang between the swing arm and the engine.

its the battery overflow pipe that you need to worry about. fuel normally only leaks out of the overflow when the bike is stationary or the fuel is left on especially with old bikes no matter how clean you think your tank is micro particles will still get through the filters & cause the float needles not to seat & fuel level will rise & run out of the overflow pipes. if your battery is over filled with acid or your charging system is over charging the battery it will run through the overflow & ruin the chrome on your wheels & your exhaust system then you will feel sick :lar :lar :lar

Ok understood but what's the answer. I have cut the pipes 50mm below engine but they still can easily touch the exhaust the way they hang. Does that feel right?

use an O ring & secure it to the lower frame cross member with a cable tie & run the overflow pipes through the O ring

I need to check the carb floats, yes i should have done this off the bike! but i'm still learning from my mistakes.

i understand i need to use clear pipe from the carb drain plug. What do i use in the drain plug that i can connect the clear pipe to without petrol pouring out?

You can make a manometer thats a cheapo version of the proper one Z1b man shows,go to your local aquatics they sell clear air tube, get an inline plastic coupler for the tube, screw it into the bottom of the float bowl and attach pipe, tape to side if bowl to see level...Paul j

Wayne - to prevent you "feeling sick" as z1bman puts it, buy a gel battery!
http://www.motorcycleproducts.co.uk/bat ... 29726.html
they hold a much better charge (keep them on a trickle charger during when not riding) and have a better cranking power
than lead-acid batteries.
