Z1100r barrel swap help

#1 PostAuthor: weaver » Wed Apr 17, 2013 2:17 pm

My barrels have quite a few damaged fins so I bought what I was told were z1100r barrels. My plan was to sweat out the liners from my damaged barrels and fit them into the undamaged replacements.
However on stripping the bike there are some differences between the 2 sets of barrels.

Both barrels are stamped 1089 cc and measure 72.5mm.

However if you check the pics you will see on the originals still on the bike there are no recesses for seals on the 4 outer studs, whereas on the replacements there are.

Looking at the fiches it looks like the barrels I have bought are from a Gpz1100b1/b2.

My questions are,can I still sweat out my barrels and fit them into the b1 barrels, will I need to use the b1 head gaskets? Will my z1100r head fit with these barrels?Any other problems I haven't thought of?
thanks

YOU WILL NEED HEAD GASKETS 11004-1263

HEAD O RINGS 92055-1148

YES THE LINERS ARE INTERCHANGEABLE BUT YOU WILL POSSIBLY HAVE TO GET THEM SKIMMED

I would just get the fins repaired you might get more problems by disturbing the liners. I got some barrels sorted by cutting fins off a goosed set and having them welded onto my good set.

weaver i have noticed that your replacement barrels have the split spring dowels where the 4 o rings fit . make sure they are inserted slightly above the o rings when you re assemble the head. they are there to protect the o rings from excessive oil pressure + to stop the oil from distorting the o rings + causing oil leakage

I would agree with Big Green Bus, as there is the possibility of distortion also if a liner does not fit back in exactly the same direction, the cylinder piston wear would no longer match :| Repaing the fins is not difficult or expensive

thanks for the tip mate,I ran a straight edge over the top of barrels and two of the inserts were slightly proud of the mating surface so I tapped them flush,I will see what they are like with the seals fitted, ordered from zpower today so should be here in a couple of days
