Swingarm help

#1 PostAuthor: Fred the Zed » Thu Jan 03, 2013 5:17 pm

Hi
Righto all of you recognition experts... Ive got hold of a alloy swingarm which is off a z900 or z1000 (I'm told).

It appears to be the right length, width and will fit my 78 Z1R but the shock mounts look different. The existing swingarm shock mounts are 'U' shaped with the shock lower mounts fitting between the arms of the 'U'.

On this swingarm it appears that the shock bolts either against or around the mounting.

Questions...

1. Any idea of the make... I was told Metmachex and have no reason to doubt the seller
2. Will my current Z1R shocks fit this swingarm or do I need shocks with an inverted 'U' lower mounting?
Any answer if you are sure you are right please.

BTW... Maxton will custom build a pair of shocks to fit your bike and to suit you as an individual for £440+VAT. Not bad, I thought.

Cheers!

Id agree with the Metmachex brand thing. Ive a couple of JMC swingarms, and they are different to that one. Why not check out quad bike shockers,as you can get new remote (ohlin style)ones for not a massive amount of money?? Or monoshock it! :D Go for a Yam thunderace arm, which if you squint looks like an expensive overpriced but lovely Santuary one......Just a thought.
I figure you know the style you want? :D

Cheers Steve and Brett!

I'll put the Z1R apart soon and fit it to see what it looks like. I'll do a 530 chain conversion at the same time to lose some more weight off the rear. Is it just Debbens that do the conversion kits?

Debben do kits but you can just buy sprockets and a chain. Talon or B+C for sprockets anyone for chain. Just whatever you find easiest and cheapest.

Those forked bottom shock mounts tended to be on Suzuki shocks. It may have been an arm originally ntended for a GS1000 or something later used in a Zed. The mounts could be replaced with the U type if you wanted to.

When I said monoshock i wasnt thinking of xjr13 swingarms which also look like the expensive Sanctuary ones.
Dont take any notice of me though. :D

This used to be the same swingarm as the one in youre picture. Now drastically altered as you see it and little of the original remains, but has the threaded shock mounts on the inside of the lower shock bushes as yours does.
I put nuts on the inside of the mounting ears as well for a bit of peace of mind.

Cheers guys, thats all really useful info.

I'm loving that drag racing Z1R.... best buy some more lottery tickets if I want to go that way.

All the best
