Z1A Frame and Engine numbers

#1 PostAuthor: jeager98 » Sat Mar 19, 2016 6:35 pm

Hi To all.
I recently joined up after deciding that I wanted to acquire another bike. I currently own a 77 Z1000.
So, I have been looking at some possible purchases and I come across a fairly local bike to me but after a viewing i was a bit perplexed by the engine and frame numbers.
It is a Swiss registered 1974 Z1A, But the engine number is Z1 79.669.969
and the frame number although seemingly correct for the year has a five pointed star at either end of the 5 digit number, Z1F *385$$* (where the * equals a 5 pointed star)
So my question is, does anyone have any info on these strange formats?
The engine number looks as if it has been machined flat and possibly restamped with the strange set of numbers, also the crankcase has an oil capacity stamp next to the oil filler cap (3800cc) So is it even a 900? I thought the 900 didn't have this (just the Z1000)
Any thoughts?

Cheers Russ

Z1/A/B did not have oil capacity stamp. Z900A4 (last model) did.

I believe the stars either side of the frame number indicates it was originally supplied to the Italian market..........but I could be wrong !!
