I have used Humbrol to highlight the lettering on my bike and our kids and it looks good and stays on. I would agree that if spraying the whole casing then an etch primer would be needed, but because all that you are doing is highlighting the letters and the back ground is textured so holds the paint anyway, then etching is not necessary.
To get the correct satin look I mixed a Humbrol gloss and a matt together which made a satin finish (couldnt get a Humbrol satin). Heat is not an issue.
