Started the bikes total strip down today, all bits/bolts taken apart bagged and labelled/wrapped in bubble wrap and in storage boxes, all electrics dismantled so far photographed and all male/female joints individually marked so i know what ones go where later (electrics scare the crap out of me,its witchcraft for sure)All bits for powder coating/spraying marked and kept seperate. Anything else i could also be doing to make things easier now and when its time to put it back together.

Hello Pumba54, Are you having the frame blasted, if so tape up all the threads, internal and external, this saves time on taping the threads and any wear such as the rear shock mounts, tape up where the stearing bearings have been removed, and the engine plate mounting holes, good luck, Steve

Spray your electrical connector blocks with WD40 or duck oil, There's no need to mark which connector goes to which they wire colours will tell you that, but it is useful to mark the loom blocks with where they go. Buy an optimate and leave your battery tricklecharging all winter if maintenance free or fully charge it and then leave it somewhere coldish if lead/acid. If you wash anything before putting it away make sure it's dry (a week in the back of the airing cupboard is good)

Have been spraying all blocks with WD40 and im marking em up coz i aint very good with colours. Some of the bigger bits (chaingaurd etc) need washing but they are to one side and i will do em all at the same time and the airing cupboard had already crossed my mind.
Was gonna send all bits that need powder coating to Triple S and talk to them about taping up screw threads etc,but thanks for the tip Steve.
Jack,i took your advice and have been shredding all the receipts and hiding the bills with my fishing stuff, she wont go near it so its safe.Nearly got all the sundries i planned for it,only waiting on the Ohlins and Taylor leads, any costs now are for work that needs doing, and i also need to hone my tea making skills of course.

If your stripping the engine, nows the time to check the condition of the threads in the upper crankcase, any slightly dodgy ones should be replaced with proper inserts (not Heli-coils).

Good luck.
Mike

Good choice sending the frame to triple s , dont worry about taping up threads they will do all that, they did mine last winter a beautifull job as ever.
Are you keeping the bike standard, if not its well worth getting the frame braced, extra tube across the front under the ezhausts another one across the back by the swing arm and three small ones under the tank to tie the top tubed together, this really helps eliminate the good old 90 mph+ weave, while being very discreet. Cost me ?100 to have mine done.
Probably too late to mention it know but use a digital camera and take lots and lots of pics.
With the wiring all i do is label each end of each connector 1, 2, etc. and make any little notes about where they are routed on apiece of paper.
Lastly when you are putting the engine back in the frame, take the cam cover off to give a bit of extra room then lay the enbine on its side on a cushion or old bit of carpet ( empty of oil !!) and lower the frame carefully over the engine and bolt up this is much easier and you are mech less likely to scratch your nice new paint, tape over the exhaust studs thoughas they are the bits that will scratch the frame.
Good Luck, have fun!!

Taken on the chin Bunnyz, we deserved it on the day,and i like Psycho.
Taken plenty of pics as im going along, bike will be pretty standard engine wise and tarted up elsewhere.Hadnt thought about frame bracing, i thought the weave was all part of the fun riding it, where did you get yours done?Saw the tip about putting the engine on the Z Power site, saves a lot of huffing and puffing, and dont want to mark any of the bling either.

Got mine done at an engineering firm in Keighley,3 miles up the road from triple s , they are all into bikes mostly twin shock and rigid trials Bikes and old brit stuff, I think they spend more time working on their bikes than doing engineering.
If you have the time you could bring the frame up here . we could mark it up where the extra tubes go and take it to the engineering firm then when they have done there bit I will pick it up for you and take it down to Andy at triple s

Dale you shouldn't need to bother with extra bracing as Eddie Lawson raced an un-braced Z1000J frame to 2 AMA Superbike championships. The pre J frames benefit much more from the extra bracing,Kawasaki realised this and braced the J type frames as standard.

A good suggestion though Steve as i know folks who've braced the earlier Z frames and have told me it's well worth doing.
As Dale is a bit of a snob,he'd want me to tell you that it's actually a Z1000R2 ELR.
Eddie raced a J though!!!!
