Carb identification please

#1 PostAuthor: garyd » Sun Aug 11, 2013 8:13 pm

I'll be adding photos a little later but just removed the carbs from my z1000 LTD ( MKII engine) and the 2nd carb from the left has some sort of acelertor punp.

It looks like it's meant to be there but not seen this before.

Is this STD on an import Ltd? or from another model.

thanks for any help

Oddly enough...yes.

Was thinking about a tart up over winter and thought about going for 29mm.

Only really took them off to give them a bit of a clean.

I thought the pumps were only useful for carbs set up for big engines and needed a bit of help on WOT.

No. Everytime you open the throttle they squirt.
They react quicker that the pilot and main jet.
Sort of fills in the gap and gives faster throttle response.
Probably better carbs than the 29's unless you are going with an overbore, fast cams and flowed head for outright top speed.
All this fitting of 29's on relatively mild road motors is crap, I would take your 28 pumpers everytime.
You can easily pull 160mph on 28's and keep the lowdown response.

Bugger! These were on my modded Z1-A when I got it, I was told they were crap so I yanked 'em off and put original Z1 28's on. :(

You just keep learning Z stuff every day.

So the big question is "what are they worth"?

Well, I've been advised these are about the best ones I can get for a good road bike so I'd be foolish to part with them.

I appreciate your honesty guys.

checked a set I've got today and they are the same. tidy. :D
Do you think they would be better than 34CV carbs like on the R1 for a 900 with popi cams and a kerker?

Should mention that these pumper carbs came in 26mm as well but only for a short production run.
They are identified ( other than by measuring the venturi ) by the extra diaphragm on the underside next to the accelerator pump.

The 28's don't have the extra diaphragm but just the unfinished casting.

The diaphragm works of the inlet vacuum and prevents the accelerator pump from working unless the engine is running to prevent flooding.

The 28's were a replacement for the 26's which didn't perform as well as Kawasaki intended.

I would favour the slide carbs over the cv's .
