Rev Counter Drive Housing Question

#1 PostAuthor: Dude10028 » Thu Jun 13, 2013 8:27 pm

Took this housing out my Z1A to replace seals cause of weep (yeah, i know they all do that but thought i'd try anyway). Thing is it doesn't look like the one in the book for this bike cause that only has one o ring! Anyone know if this is off later model or what?

Don't really care but would like to know that the inner seal i have for the original will fit before i get the old one out with screwdriver because if they turn out to be different and i have to put it back it'll leak for sure. This also has two o ring grooves and ones bigger than the other so what size seals go in those...

Looks like someone with a lathe has cut the extra 'O' ring groove.

You should be ok to change the seal.

Yep mine leaks all over the harris when it gets warm, when I do mine i'm gonna see if I can get a high temperature oil tolerant double lipped seal on there or am I going overboard on this path? If some ones already done it and posted it in the past I can only apologise for not searching for it, I know that I can get Viton or even Teflon O rings. It's on the list of things to do, carbs leaking off all 4 overflows, but the little buggers take it in turns, it'll be fuel levels or float needles/seats, they're standards on the ST over jetted (hopefully) for that slightly enlarged bore engine, back tyre new one fitted still goes down over a week! I know all you knowledgeable peeps will be laughing, yep forgot to change o ring on back of tyre valve, front fork seals in the 1000rx legs that are fitted, sort front master brake res, sort back master res/brake the list goes on but the engine at least starts ok and when warm sounds gorgeous :D

It looks similar to the Taiwaneeze aftermarket one I got from Z Power.

The ZP one has accurately machined grooves - I installed mine lubricating the supplied seals with red rubber grease - no leaks!

Just a thought... the leak may be coming from the pinion shaft oil seal. The o-ring(s) usually do the job! Previous owner went to a lot of trouble to put an extra o-ring in.

Ta very much took mine out this morning, nowt wrong with o ring but please enlighten me, is there a seal that sits inbetween where the pinion drive sicks out the housing and where you screw tacho cable on, coz if there is I ain't bloody got one or it wernt there. So should it have one and if so what size? I'll have a grovel through me XT500 bits an see if I've got a rocker cover with one in, you never know but it would explain the oil dripping out when running!

Great I shall be round to the bearing place on Monday I guess that the MK2 1015 head is different to the piccies above coz mine has a hex head and has a separate lock plate and a retainer plate which sit on top of each other, is this right?

Spring facing in. Also check that the shaft isn't corroded/rough, as it will quickly destroy your new seal if it is.

Cheers for that not having one in the first place don't help I've not done one before 12 years ago I de-kawasakid my life including the gen workshop manuals but kept all the xt500 stuff so left myself with no reference to this so thank you very much Phil and the shaft isn't corroded just well lubricated there are light wear lines where it obviously has had a seal sometime over the last 32 years! It will be done by 6.30am. Cheers
