hi all
im struggling with a problem on my kz1000 a1.....when i bought the bike it had a nameless[loud] exhaust the bike ran badly so a standard exhaust was fitted, new points and condesors fitted, standard airbox, new carb intake rubbers, cylinder compression checked[ok]carbs cleaned and balanced, the bike still ran badly,a pair of ign coils borrowed from a club member[cheers gez]have been fitted and the bike still runs like a bag of spanners, the bike did smoke a little when i started it today but it has stood for quite a while without being run.....i did notice today that after 5 to ten minutes running[badly] the left hand cylinder was quite cool[i could place my hand against it immediately after i switched the engine off] the right hand cylinder on the other hand was very warm as you would expect......any ideas what it could be lads...any help gratefully received
cheers steve :grr

Plugs?
Dyna s will be a huge improvement on the points.
Are you getting 12v at the coils?

Hi Stephen, a lot of the old zeds do this but will generally fire up after a minute or two i guess you have swapped leads 1+4 round to see if its these, maybe some new plugs, check the valve clearances, also check you have 12 volts going to the coils, i had this with my thou and done all the things you have and more and it still used to do this right up until i put an exhaust system on that was almost like the originals and never suffered this problem again.

Swap plugs 1st - then 1 & 4 leads..... see if problem follows either item
And on the 7th day... Zeds were created!

fuel heights, pilot system, choke system, plugs, leads (probably built into the coils).
Pull the plugs out and see what they're like.
