Z1b twin disc question

#1 PostAuthor: coldsummer » Sat Feb 13, 2010 5:14 pm

I decided to do some more on the Z1b rebuild this afternoon and set about assembling the front wheel/discs etc. I noticed that there should be a circlip[ and oil seal on the rhs (opposite speedo drive) but instead mine has some kind of spacer which is quite a tight fit in the hub. I don't remember taking a circlip out either but could have been done by Griffs when they powder coated the hub. Certainly isn't there now or in the bag of old bits they gave me back.

So....., any ideas guys? Should I order the parts from Z-power on Monday or put it back the way it came out? I think at least I should order a retaining circlip for the bearing.

Mine has been converted to twin disc in the past so it porobably is to do with that but I don't have a parts diag for an early hub with twin discs.

Looks like another delay...

Coldsummer, I don't think you will find anything in the "Second Disk brake conversion" instructions.

All Z1 series have the circlip to retain the bearing. It can often go un-noticed when reassembling the axle. There should be a spacer shaped something like a half cotton-reel. Maybe there has been a slight mod to your front end? If you use sealed bearings the oil seal is redundant and may be fitted just for looks.

Thanks Garn. Yea, that's the trouble with an 'aftermarket' disc conversion, no factory instructions around. Just thought someone out there might have some experience/knowledge. I have the spacer but it seems unlikely that it should just sit against the 'new' spacer. Definitely need to get a circlip I think.

Just another little challenge to overcome

According to Phil at Z-power the oil seal is no longer available which may account for why mine had a spacer fitted instead. Circlip out of stock so he had to order one in. More delays, but at least I can fit the new shocks and renthalls to the ZRX this weekend :)

Bugger. Z-power sent me the circlip which I duly fitted in the proper place right next to the bearing. Oil seal NLA so I decided to refit the spacer. Unfortunately I didn't measure the depth and it turns out the damned thing doesn't sit far enough inside the hub with the circlip fitted. Looks like it doesn't need the circlip after all which probably accounts for the fact that I couldn't find the old one! . Trouble is, I don't have enough clearance to drift the spacer back out again and it's a really tight fit so it looks like a trip down to Griffs to see if they have a suitable puller. How frustrating

PS - Thanks to Keith for sending the twin disc conversion instructions. It's very interesting but doesn't shed any more light.
