Frustrating noise that sounds like a wide shim clearance or likened to an old cortina with a knackered camshaft!!
Noise on start up and remains the same when hot
Heres what I,ve done so far
Top end off
Checked rings and bores OK ( new rings and honing marks still in bores )
Compression test 150ish on all four cold 135-145 hot
Valves checked and ground in ( one bent so replaced )
Valve guides OK
Springs/valves within tolerances no damage evident
All cam chain wheels OK including slipper at front of barrels
Cam chain OK including adjuster
Cams checked and in tolerance
Cam shell bearings replaced
Shim clearances 3thou one at 4thou
No smoke and pulls like a train
Any other thoughts please

z1000 engine noise

Hi Paul,
this is probably not relevant as I suspect you have determined the noise is top end, however I thought Id share my very own recent experience with a noise from my engine. Eventualy found the Advance Retard unit was striking (Only Just) the ends of the small screws that hold on the Dyna-s pick ups, I have not been able to identify why this happened but suspect excess crankshaft float is to blame. Alex.
Also some zeds are prone to knocky cam shafts but usually disapears after warm up.

Had exactly the same after the first rebuild on my 73. Head had to come off again for other work, so I rechecked valve stem play within guides and found one was a little too loose. Had this guide - well all guides actually - replaced and valve seats recut. Engine now runs silently.
I think what happens is any excessive guide play means valve will 'clatter' shut - ie bounce around seat before settling - hence noise.

just to add to padders comments mine suffered from the magnet carrier had actually come loose on the tapered centre

same happened to mine had to change rotor, noise now gone
