Cheers GB....... I had planned to do it anyhow... just couldn't be arsed - and had to read up about it & get me head around it before I tried me hand
I had set the cams as they were before I stripped it down... so whoever did it was not too hot
The bike had only been attended to by local bike shops to the previous owner, as he new diddly squat about mechanics
If the bike STILL has running problems... I'll be breaking the b******d

Good news Mark. Glad you found out what the others didnt know or couldnt work out for themselves. Is it the reason he sold the bike. Got it fixed.... mechanic swears blind its right..... owner not satisfied....etc etc.
Get the quicky gas on it and well go and kick some tripple botty at the Pod!
Mines going now and when Fatty Z1R gets his bits he'll be up and running too.
Barry should be below the magic 9.5 by now so a bit of catching up to do.
P.S. Ive got one of those degree disks from Wassell. Like all thir other stuff it was sub standard. Sure mines only got 359 degrees on it!!
Zeroed; did you edit your post or it it something more sinister????
Part of the text disappeared whilst i was reading it!!

Taffus..... Loads of photo's & take your time....... Check & re-check
Thats why I left this bike for so long... wanted to make sure my head was clear.....
and have plenty of time to tackle it again
I've never degreed cams before and hopefully I'll have a good result when I fire it up in a week or two
Post loads of details/photo's in the Project scetion too
and include which biscuits you prefer when "spanner-spinning"

But that didn't work to well
I used the clamp off a proper dial stand, and the bit that clamped onto the rod fitted on the cam cap allen bolt head
With a bit of jiggling & luck, it was in the right position
All thats needed is to get a bit of bucket deflection ( valve open about 1mm) to take the degree readings. Then you can calculate the lobe centres.... aiming for 108 degs in my case. This should be a good average starting point for these lumpy cams

Again I modified the dial gauge adaptor (14mm) which screws into the plug hole. Anything that is a positive stop for the piston ( a few mm from TDC) is OK. Just wind the engine over by hand (the 17mm nut on ignition side) until the piston touched it.
Set degree wheel to a few degrees before TDC. Fix a pointer off a casing screw somewhere handy
Next reverse engine nearly a whole rev until the piston touches the stop again. Note the degree reading. It'll be X degs BTDC. Divide the diference by 2 and this will be where you set the degree wheel when the stop is removed, at TDC. Re do the check with the stop & the pointer should be an equal amount either side of TDC if right

Heres' a slightly fuller explanation Taffus with a couple of identical pictures to Piggys'
What is the reason for taking the head off? Is something not right under there.

bike is a converted B1 so the inlet tracts are longer than standard which is preventing me from putting a standard airbox on, also I suspect the valve seals are gone.
I have another head from Pigford which has been gas flowed and has shims under buckets.
bike is an Italian import and alleges it has done only 20K miles but it does use a lot of oil.
huge flat spot at 5k, just made worse this weekend by lowering the needle (will back out that mod tonight!) hence wanting an airbox.
