Crankcases back together, sump on and ready to slot in to the frame! So glad I took loads of pictures of the selector forks etc on gearbox or it would never have gone back in the same way.

The most surprising thing was that I had no bits left over when everything was built :D . Very unlike me! Even when I used to put aeroplanes together I never felt completely happy unless i had 1 or 2 bolts left over after an engine change

Anyone local to Faringdon that can lend me some piston ring compressors? If not old plastic bottles and tie wraps here i come......

Got my barrels on and starting to see some real progress until we hit a problem with a replacement rotor and the starter clutch.

Whilst I try and sort a solution to the broken rotor I thought I would loosely assemble everything lurking around the garage just to see what the finished bike might look like. I was pretty pleased with the result and hopefully will give me the inspiration to push on and get it finished before next spring. Interested to know what people think??

Still loads to do but some light at the end of the tunnel now :D

Probably not for road use! Might be interesting to see if it will hoover up the kids or the cats etc but I have a set of K&N's lurking in the garage. Given the investment to date in that engine it would be a shame to blow it with no filters.

The sun is shining so thought i might invest some time in the bike. Just realised that moving my pictures around my photobox accounts has lost the links to all the pictures so will re-do some.

Anyway wish I had not started now as when I came to tighten down the cam holders I found 3 of the holes have stripped threads and wont tighten down. This after all the money on gas flowing, valves etc

Best get on eBay for a helicoiling set and try again. They must have been glued in with loctite as I cant remember any issues when i took them off.

Will post some new photos later.

Martin, I had exactly the same problem when I tightened my cam caps down, something like 4 threads stripped. I got my helicoil kit from Unithread, who I recomend (01803 867832).

one step forward, 2 back over the weekend. Bought the helicoil kit from Uni-threads as recommended by Robw. Great service and advice but found I need to remove the head again to drill out the holes. My old man who is wise on such things recommended I did all the holes whilst it is off so back on phone to Unithreads this morning as the kit only comes with 8 coils and I need 16. Also need to find machine shop round here to get holes drilled accurately by someone with a pillar drill. He says my Black and Decker is not recommended...

Question for the experts on the head gasket... :?: :?:

Should I fit a new one? Head was correctly torqued down before it was removed but engine never run. Do i need to buy another new head gasket or am I ok using the same one??

I'd re use the head gasket if you haven't run it

But, there is always a slight possibility it may weep :?? But at about £50 for a decent Cometic, worth a punt

Looks really nice by the way

Time for a quick update and pictures will be posted when I find where my wife has hidden the camera.

Engine rebuilt but using original cams after the issues with the Web ones. Filled it with oil and some minor leaks but a bit of bolt tightening seems to have done the trick. Put the battery on charge all weekend and then disaster!!!

Had the bike on axle stands to sort out front wheel spacing and I managed to drop it as I took it off the stands. Ignition cover smashed and brand new Kerker dented and very hurt pride. Copious swearing and a few tears

Battery slotted in, reconnected, petrol in tank, turn ignition on, pressed starter button and......

nothing.......

either battery f**ked or not earthing where copious plastic coating applied. Out with multi-meter next weekend to trace problems.

Also cant get brakes sorted. The pads supplied by Norman Hyde for my AP calipers are too thick. I can squeeze in pads but not pads and discs so think they might be wrong. Also hydraulic clutch conversion I had made is leaking and I cant find the nut that holds gearbox end sprocket on.

Oh joy!

Pictures to follow as it does look smart.....
